Dunbar could do just about anything it wanted against Washington in Friday's Class 1A state semifinal. The Poets had a large advantage in size, speed and strength. In other words, they were just too much. The Jaguars, from Somerset County, scored the game's first basket, but the rest of the evening belonged to No. 1 Dunbar. The Poets needed only four minutes to increase their lead to 10 points, and they didn't have much trouble in a 70-41 victory over Washington at the University of Maryland's Comcast Center.

The flowers left in condolence are a kind but painful reminder that De'ontae Smith is gone, as is the funeral program his mother carries around to remember the boy stabbed to death downtown just hours after the Baltimore Ravens' Super Bowl victory parade. Chevita Bumbrey and her husband, Donae Wright, have struggled with De'ontae's conspicuous absence. He could usually be found slouching on the couch playing video games or dancing the "mump" to rap music - shuffling wide-legged on the wood floor.

Maryland and Duke are no strangers on the lacrosse field. The Terrapins and Blue Devils, who have been the Atlantic Coast Conference's two most dominant lacrosse programs in the past decade, have met during the regular season, ACC tournament and NCAA tournament's championship weekend in each of the past two years, with Maryland winning four of the six games. In the seventh matchup between the two teams in the past three seasons, No. 1 Maryland routed the Blue Devils, 16-7, in a lopsided game from start to finish at Koskinen Stadium.

Defending state champion Aberdeen found itself in unfamiliar playoff territory Friday night, trailing City at halftime of the Class 3A North girls basketball final. Still, it wasn't anything a defensive tweak and small scoring spurt couldn't fix. Fortunately for the No. 2 Eagles, the defensive tweak helped spark a big scoring spurt with 24 straight points, setting them on course for a 73-45 victory and their third straight regional title. Freshman Stephanie Jones scored 11 of her 33 points and had 10 of her 21 rebounds as host Aberdeen took off in the third quarter.

Going into Wednesday night's Class 3A North regional basketball semifinal, the Aberdeen girls figured they could run against Digital Harbor, but they still had to counter the Rams' inside game. When two of Digital's top three inside threats got into foul trouble in the second quarter and All-Metro forward A'Lexus Harrison had to sit with three fouls, No. 2 Aberdeen ran away with a 74-40 victory. "One of our main goals is to get their good people out of the game, then we can take over," Eagles senior guard Jimmia McCluskey said.

Washington College got what it wanted, avenging a two-game sweep last season by thumping host Goucher, 16-8, last Saturday. In the process, the Shoremen may have gotten something that could pay dividends in the future. Nine different players scored goals in the victory, and while senior attackman Bennett Cord - last season's leading scorer - registered two goals and one assist, Washington's offense was much more diversified than just one player. Among the highlights, junior midfielder Hunter Nowicki paced the team with three goals and one assist, sophomore midfielder Grant Hughes scored three times, and senior attackman Matt Lewis posted one goal and two assists.
