UMBC's 13-goal thumping of Vermont last Saturday had a plethora of motivations, but the disappointment of a 15-14 overtime loss to Hartford on March 30 fueled the team. The Retrievers had a one-goal lead until the Hawks scored with 11 seconds in regulation and then 54 seconds into the extra frame in the season-opening America East contest for both sides. Coach Don Zimmerman wasn't shy about admitting that the setback to Hartford inspired UMBC's effort against the Catamounts. “I think it was a combination of things,” he said Tuesday morning.

No. 7 Notre Dame made its argument Tuesday for why it still belongs in discussions about the best men's lacrosse team in NCAA Division I. One day removed from falling out of the top spot in The Baltimore Sun's rankings, the Fighting Irish (7-2) rolled to a 17-5 neutral-site victory over a less-experienced Golden Eagles (2-5) squad at Loyola Academy's Hoerster Field in Wilmette, Ill. The Golden Eagles, who started seven underclassmen - including a half-dozen freshmen - kept things close early after a fairly pedestrian first quarter in which both sides tried to control the tempo by being selective on the attacking end. Co-captain Ben Dvorak got Marquette on the scoreboard with 40 seconds left in the opening quarter to tie the score at 1. It didn't stay even for long, however, as Notre Dame's John Scioscia ended the first quarter with the first of his six goals on the day. The score remained that way until near the midway point of the second quarter.

Senior faceoff specialist Mike Poppleton will be a game-time decision for No. 12 Johns Hopkins' showdown with No. 4 North Carolina on Saturday. Poppleton, who has won 70.9 percent (100 of 141) of his draws this season, left Saturday's 15-8 victory over No. 13 Virginia with an unspecified injury shortly after winning four of six faceoffs and scoring once. Poppleton did not return, and coach Dave Pietramala said a decision on Poppleton won't be made until Saturday. “He's good,” Pietramala said.

Maryland has the highest scoring offense in Division I women's lacrosse, but the Terps ' attack needed a jump-start from its defense Saturday against James Madison. After the No. 1 Terps (11-0) fell behind early, they used a stifling midfield defense to handcuff the No. 17 Dukes and start their offense rolling toward an 18-8 victory at Maryland's Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. The Dukes jumped out to a 2-0 lead, thanks in part to winning the first two draws and they shut out the Terps , who went into the game averaging 16.40 goals, for nearly 13 minutes.
