Motorists on Route 170 can expect some delays today when traffic is shifted on both the northbound and southbound sides of the thoroughfare as part of a widening project. It is one of two road closings planned in Anne Arundel this week.A section of southbound Interstate 97 between Routes 648 and 100 will be closed Saturday to allow construction crews to open newly completed lanes on the heavily traveled highway.For the Route 170 project, State Highway Administration crews will move traffic east for one mile between Route 176 and the Route 100 bridge over Route 170 at 9 a.m. today to accommodate the opening of a second lane on both sides of Route 170 between Route 176 and the Route 100 bridge.

Gold Lot open, offers least expensive rate for parking The Gold Lot at Baltimore-Washington International Airport has been upgraded and opened for daily use at the least expensive rate in the surrounding area. The Gold Lot is on Route 176 (Dorsey Road) with 3,400 spaces offered at an hourly rate of $1 with a maximum charge of $4 per day. The seventh day is free. BWI has improved the asphalt and gravel surfaces, and additional lighting is being installed. The Gold Lot has spaces for the handicapped, public telephones, emergency services, bus shelters and free shuttle service to the airport terminal every 15 minutes.

Contractors have started working on a $29.5 million, two-year project that will connect Route 100 in Howard and Anne Arundel counties.Only a small segment of Route 100 is in Howard county between Interstate 95 and U.S. 1. The new project is a three-mile section that will connect with the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.The I-95 to Baltimore-Washington Parkway segment will include five new bridges. Two bridges will carry U.S. 1 and relocated Race Road over Route 100, two others will carry Route 100 over Deep Run stream and the CSX-MARC railway, and one bridge will take relocated Race Road over Deep Run.The project, awarded to the Williams Construction Co. of Baltimore, is expected to be finished by winter 1994.

After a five-day delay, the State Highway Administration will open a 2.27-mile section of Route 100 between Interstate 95 and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway at 7 p.m. tomorrow.The opening will mark the completion of the first leg of Route 100 in Anne Arundel County since the original stretch between Gibson Island and Route 3 in the 1970s.Although the road had been scheduled to open Saturday, rain kept crews from completing necessary work in time, said SHA spokesman John Healy.Crews are working to complete the remaining portion of the road between the parkway and Interstate 97 by the fall, Healy said.

A Severn man's wild ride on the door of a Ford Taurus Wednesday morning ended with the arrest of the driver on assault charges and the victim and the suspect accusing one another of robbery, county police said.Robert Winfield Jacks, 21, was treated for stab wounds, cuts, scrapes and bruises at North Arundel Hospital and released, police said.Western District Officer Thomas McBride Jr. was on patrol on Pioneer Drive near Arwell Court about 1 a.m. when a car zoomed past him with Mr. Jacks hanging on the driver's door.

This list of highway projects includes only newly announced work, not continuing construction.New highway projectsWest Ring Factory Road, between Route 924 and Route 24, south of Bel Air -- Will be closed to traffic until February from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays for reconstruction. Motorists are urged to use Bel Air South Parkway.Cool Branch Road between Route 136 and Rolling Green Road in Churchville -- Will be closed until the middle of October while the earthen portion of Cool Branch is reconstructed.

Here's what to look for in the Baltimore area this week. This list includes only newly announced work, not continuing construction, which is extensive on several highways, including Interstate 95, U.S. 50/301 and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.New highway projectsConstruction on the Hanover Street bridge will block marine traffic requiring the lifting of the span from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. today and tomorrow. All other boats may proceed. The bridge will remain open to one lane of vehicular traffic in each direction.
