The State Highway Administration plans to add lanes and widen a bridge at the Interstate 195-Aviation Boulevard interchange near Baltimore-Washington International Airport.The project is to start early next year and take more than a year.Traffic volume in the area has increased steadily, creating a need for better and safer access to both roads, said SHA spokesman Chuck Brown.Interstate 195 takes motorists from Interstate 95, past industrial and business parks, to the passenger terminal at the airport.

Gold Lot open, offers least expensive rate for parking The Gold Lot at Baltimore-Washington International Airport has been upgraded and opened for daily use at the least expensive rate in the surrounding area. The Gold Lot is on Route 176 (Dorsey Road) with 3,400 spaces offered at an hourly rate of $1 with a maximum charge of $4 per day. The seventh day is free. BWI has improved the asphalt and gravel surfaces, and additional lighting is being installed. The Gold Lot has spaces for the handicapped, public telephones, emergency services, bus shelters and free shuttle service to the airport terminal every 15 minutes.

People bound for Baltimore-Washington International Airport this weekend will encounter lane closings and suspended rail service as part of the airport lane-construction project. All three lanes of Interstate 195 into BWI will close at 10 p.m. today near the Route 170 exit, airport officials announced yesterday. Until the first lane reopens at 6 a.m. tomorrow, travelers should exit onto Aviation Boulevard (Route 170) toward Linthicum and turn onto Elm Road, which leads to the airport's departure and arrival levels.

Lane closures slated for roads leading to airport terminal Travelers arriving at Baltimore-Washington International Airport at night in the next few weeks should be aware of lane closures that are scheduled on roads leading to the terminal. One lane will be closed on Elm Road while paving is taking place where the center islands had been. One of two lanes on the approach to the lower-level terminal roadway will also be closed. The lane closures will occur between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. every day for two to four weeks.

Tickets to a preseason hockey opener Thursday between the WashingtonCapitals and the Philadelphia Flyers at the new Piney Orchard Ice Area in Odenton will be given away to the public tomorrow morning.The 200 tickets will be given away on a first-come, first-served basisand will be limited to either two or four per person.People interested in attending the 7 p.m. game, between rookie players from both squads, can get tickets at the arena starting 9 a.m.The arena seats about 400 people. Two hundred seats are reserved for the general public and 200 are reserved for the media and state and county officials.

A Severn man died early yesterday when he was struck by a pickup truck on Telegraph Road in Severn.Michael Anthony Kinstler, 29, of the 7700 block of Twin Oaks Road was pronounced dead shortly after the 1: 30 a.m. accident, Anne Arundel County police reported.Officers said Kinstler was walking north on Telegraph Road (Route 170) near Norcross Lane when he was hit by the Toyota pickup, which was southbound.The driver of the truck, James Quentin Walker, 21, of the 7600 block of Ridge Chapel Road in Hanover was charged with drunken driving, police said.

A 65-year-old man was fatally injured in Odenton yesterday when a car struck him from behind as he pedaled a cycle along Route 170, county police reported. The victim, whose identity was not immediately available, was riding his three-wheel cycle with the flow of traffic near Rodgers Lane about 1:30 p.m. when a Plymouth Acclaim hit him from behind, police said. The man, an Odenton resident, was taken to North Arundel Hospital, where he died of his injuries. The 37-year-old driver, also of Odenton, failed to stay in his designated lane, police said.

American Eagle adds sixth daily flight between BWI, Boston American Eagle has announced a sixth daily roundtrip flight between Baltimore-Washington International Airport and Boston's Logan Airport, scheduled to begin July 2, after the introduction last month of five daily regional flights to Boston. The new flight departs from BWI about 7 p.m. American Airlines also announced a new flight to San Juan, Puerto Rico, to begin July 2. International service at BWI continues to grow with Aer Lingus' commencement of daily service to Ireland.

A light-rail extension to BWI airport will carry commuters through Linthicum rather than along the Nursery Road business corridor, state transportation officials have decided.The Mass Transit Administration, which has been studying extension routes since June, announced its choice Friday of a path that combines parts of two earlier proposals, neither of which was enthusiastically received by many Linthicumresidents.The spur -- a little more than 2 miles long -- will cost about $31 million, said Beth Robinson, the MTA's community relations specialist.

US Airways Express plans to begin service to Newburgh, N.Y. US Airways Express will introduce new nonstop service between Baltimore-Washington International Airport and Stewart International Airport in Newburgh, N.Y., on Dec. 2, offering customers two roundtrip flights weekdays. The new flights will be operated by US Airways Express carrier Trans States Airlines and will depart BWI at 11:46 a.m. and 4:16 p.m. and arrive at Newburgh at 1:01 p.m. and 5:31 p.m. Trans States will operate the service using 30-seat Jetstream-41 jet-prop aircraft.
