Signs recently went up along Route 32 between Clarksville (Route 108) and West Friendship (near Interstate 70) informing drivers of mandatory use of their headlights. "Motorists have likely seen a number of the new signs installed in the past few weeks," said Dave Buck of the State Highway Administration. Indeed, they have. And they've not been shy about contacting Traffic Talk with questions about them. Charles Owen wondered why only in this section, but not the section of Route 32 between West Friendship and Eldersburg.

A Columbia man was killed Thursday when his car hit a utility pole along Route 108 in Ellicott City.Howard County police said Wayne Leroy Wilson, 41, of the 5400 block of Harpers Farm Road was pronounced dead at the scene.Police said Wilson was driving east on Route 108 about 2 p.m. when his 1983 Ford Capri crested a slight rise in the road. A trash vehicle and several other cars were stopped ahead.To avoid hitting the vehicles, Wilson skidded across the center line, just east of Eliots Oak Road, and hit the pole.

A Howard County hearing examiner meeting scheduled for tonight about a proposal to build a funeral home at Route 108 and Highland Road has been canceled. Hearing examiner Thomas P. Carbo said he needs time to consider a motion - filed by opponents of the development - that asks him to reject the plans.

A 43-year-old Laurel man accused of running a red light and causing a car crash that killed an Ellicott City businessman last year has been indicted on a manslaughter charge. A Howard County grand jury returned a single-count indictment for negligent manslaughter last week against Robert Ice, of the 300 block of Brock Bridge Road. Ice was arrested Tuesday and released after posting $25,000 bond. The indictment was unsealed after his arrest. Prosecutors allege that Ice, who was westbound on Route 175 on Sept.
