Two summers ago, when northern snakeheads set up housekeeping in Crofton, I suggested holding a tournament to thin out the herd rather than turning that scummy little pond into a scene from Apocalypse Now. Flip ahead to summer 2004. More than a dozen snakeheads have been hooked in the Potomac River (no doubt because it's a shorter commute to D.C.) and someone finally has made my dopey idea a reality. Can a UPN TV show be far behind? Hard to believe, but Friday's the day for the 2004 Snakehead Roundup from 8:30 to 11 a.m. out of two marinas: Belle Haven and Columbia Island.

ALPINE, Texas -- In the early morning darkness, the activities around the B-C Ranch look pretty much like those at any other ranch in this expansive country.Shadows move between trucks and trailers, whispers carry like full voices in the dark, and the screen door bangs like a bass drum across the prairie.Eggs and bacon are filling the ranch house with welcoming smells, though there will be only a moment when everyone can sit and eat. The last gulp of coffee will be taken on the run. The sun is breaking over the Del Norte and Glass Mountains.

BOSTON -- We are in the kitchen running the numbers. It's our annual prep course at Thanksgiving Central where we major in list-making. The final count: 21 people, two tables, 19 chairs, one piano bench, 21 napkins, and 63 pieces of silverware -- if you include the two spoons mangled in the disposal. My husband goes to the cupboard to add up the glasses -- 18 that match and half a dozen orphans. I subtract the napkins still missing from our annual roundup -- one polka-dot square unaccounted for, three plain ones disappeared.

Editor's note: This Southwestern tale of courage and determination centers on a member of the squirrel family. Formally known as a marmot, the main character is referred to as a whistle pig because of its shrill alarm whistle. Long, long ago in Castle Rock, Colorado, where the mountains bulge and the air is clean, lived a little whistle pig named William. Every morning, dressed only in his long johns, William jumped from his bunk, grinned at himself in the mirror and whistled the tune, "HAPPY TRAILS TO YOUUUUU, KEEP SMILING UNTIL THEN."

Two Maryland commitments and several other Terps targets are down in Charlottesville, Va., this week for the annual NBPA Top 100 Camp. After the first day of competition Thursday, info on Potomac shooting guard Dion Wiley was scarce , while reviews of Bishop O'Connell point guard Melo Trimble seemed to be unanimously positive . One of the Terps' most under-the-radar targets, meanwhile, fared well on Day 1. InsideMDSports analyst...
