Harvard's sophomore class took a big hit this past week, as seven players in that class are no longer on the team's roster. Defensemen Jack Breit and Stephen Jahelka ; midfielders Sean Mahon , Keegan Michel (McDonogh) and Grove Stewart ; and attackmen Matt Scalise and Will Walker are not on the team's roster for 2013. A Harvard spokesman confirmed the players are not on the roster for 2013 but would not speculate on whether they would be back on the roster in the future.

On Sunday, the Ravens play the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII, and they will attempt to win their second Lombardi Trophy with a roster largely constructed with homegrown players raised in the Ravens Way. The vast majority of those players have been acquired in the past five years, though there are a handful of Pro Bowl players and franchise building blocks that have stood the test of time -- including that No. 52 guy. Here is a...

No. 11 North Carolina @No. 10 Maryland Tonight, 8:30 TV: Comcast SportsNet The 10th-ranked Maryland women's basketball team was near the end of practice Saturday when starting forward Tierney Pfirman collided knee-to-knee with a scout player and collapsed in considerable pain. Athletic trainers and coach Brenda Frese tended to Pfirman as she lay on the court with an injury later revealed to be a dislocated right kneecap. Then roughly an hour later, the Terps boarded a bus to the airport for a flight to Atlanta to play a game the next day against Georgia Tech.

As expected, the Orioles' only representative on USA Baseball's 27-man provisional roster for the World Baseball Classic is center fielder Adam Jones. The rosters for the rest of the countries will be announced later today, so other Orioles could be named then, but Miguel Gonzalez said today that he won't pitch for Mexico . Thirteen of the players on the provisional roster have USA Baseball experience, including six who have played in past WBCs. The roster includes 15 major league All-Stars, three Most Valuable Players and one Cy Young Award winner.

Orioles right-hander Miguel Gonzalez, whose Cinderella 2012 season ended with an invitation to pitch for Mexico in the World Baseball Classic, has decided he won't participate in the March tournament. Gonzalez, 28, rose from being a minor league free agent to becoming one of the Orioles' most dependable starters late in the season. He pitched 220 innings last season - including winter ball in Mexico and the minors and majors - and the team made every effort to give Gonzalez extra rest down the stretch.

Orioles fans, I don't blame you for being upset. Here we are, the second week of January, and the silence from the Warehouse is deafening. Let's review what we have so far. No major moves to make this team better in 2013. No progress in the hunt for a big bat in the middle of the order. No signing of a much-needed first baseman. (Adam LaRoche, we hardly knew you.) Instead, what we get from the Orioles front-office is the sound of crickets. Here's the team's big off-season move so far: they re-signed Nate McLouth to play left field.

The Blast roster is a melting pot - there are slightly more first- and second-year players than veterans, and more are from Brazil than the Baltimore area. All the mixing and matching - eight players on the 18-man roster come from another country, and 10 have played for the team two years or less - may have been cause for concern at the start of the Major Indoor Soccer League season. But almost midway through the 26-game schedule, the Blast has already had a nine-game winning streak - to start the year - and finds itself atop the standings with a 10-2 record.

As most fans know by now, the Orioles made an interesting move on Friday afternoon, outrighting outfielder Steve Pearce to Triple-A Norfolk. The team signed Pearce to a major league deal last month, so it is obvious that the move was made to create space on the Orioles' 40-man roster. What I'm hearing from the organization is that the addition won't be a big-name acquisition, but more of another kick-the-tires kind of player who executive vice president Dan Duquette has targeted this season.
