Why did Thomas Schaller leave out John F. Kennedy as one of the rich and politically privileged presidents in his recent column on President Obama's humble origins ("The virtues of a president with humble origins," Oct. 31)? First, we know nothing about Mr. Obama's early life. Who paid for his education and financed his early political career? Second, most of our early presidents were well off and served out of a sense of duty as statesmen, not as professional politicians whose only job is to be re-elected.

Out and About At this beautiful time of year you don't need any special reason to visit the historic district. On the weekends the historic sites - the Thomas Isaac Log Cabin, the Firehouse Museum, the Heritage Orientation Center and the Patapsco Female Institute Historic Park - are all open to visitors. Lots of shops have samples of their wares out on the sidewalk, and a few restaurants offer outdoor seating. Grab an ice cream cone and sit on a picnic bench next to the Tiber.

Chef Celeste Gebler reflects: Earlier in my career … when I had to cook for myself … I created this dish because it only used one pan and it incorporated all of the basic food groups in one meal. Back then all I could afford was chicken, so that is really how it was born. At Luna Bella we use shrimp and scallops because this dish works well with any protein. We believe you eat with your eyes first, and this dish is visually beautiful. Shrimp and Scallop Rose Marie Ingredients: - 3 U10-15 shrimp, peeled and deveined - 2 U10 sea scallops dry packed (not packed in water)

In the days after her sister, Rose, died in a train derailment, Anna Mayr felt as if her younger sibling were upstairs sleeping while friends swapped stories on the family's Ellicott City porch until the early hours of Sunday. Anna Mayr, a May graduate of the University of Maryland, had just moved to New York City to start a career in finance when her father called Tuesday to tell her the unimaginable news: Rose was killed when a CSX train ran off the tracks and buried her and one of her best friends, Elizabeth Conway Nass, in coal.

In a washed-out video projected on the wall of Bethany United Methodist Church at her memorial service Saturday, Rose Louese Mayr tumbled and fluttered in a dance portrayal of a girl with her eyes turned toward God. The dance put on display one of the many talents family and friends ascribed to the 2010 Mount Hebron High School graduate, killed last week in an Ellicott City train derailment along with longtime friend Elizabeth Conway Nass. Ms. Mayr's pastors said they hoped her performance would also offer mourners some comfort.

Rose Mayr's former boyfriend, Boris Gamazaychikov, wrote a poem about the young woman, who was killed in a train derailment shortly before midnight Tuesday. "Sometimes I imagined we would grow old together. But now I'll grow old and you'll stay young in my heart forever. And I couldn't ever see you stuck behind a picket fence. You were too busy looking at the sky and the horizon to which it led. "Remember when we climbed to the top of the earth, through the bushes and the thorns we were covered in dirt.

Encountered in Ocean City , this oddity is just a very pleasant beach wine that requires no deep contemplation. "Rose Vinho Verde" is actually an oxymoron, because "Vinho Verde" actually means "green wine," and this is decidedly pink. It does, however, resemble real Vinho Verde (a delightful white wine made from borderline underripe grapes) in its light effervescence. It's a dry, refreshing wine with hints of strawberry, cherry and hibiscus tea. Nobody will mistake it for profound, but when you're taking a lunch break by the seashore, it's just right.
