Just five years ago, PNC Bank had virtually no presence in Baltimore. Today, it is Maryland's third-largest financial institution by deposits, after Bank of America and M&T Bank. PNC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer James E. Rohr has led the growth of the Pittsburgh-based bank in the Baltimore region, starting with the acquisition of local institutional giant Mercantile Bankshares Corp., which owned the venerable Mercantile-Safe Deposit & Trust Co., in 2006. Since then, PNC has also opened new branches and has made smaller acquisitions, including taking over the banking services from then-Chevy Chase Bank at Giant Food stores in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware and Washington.

WASHINGTON -- Pope Benedict XVI arrives in the United States this week amid a full-throttle presidential campaign, with Sens. Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John McCain seeking support from the same engaged Catholics the pontiff hopes to reach. James Rohr, chief executive of PNC Financial Services Group, knows how to make inroads in a community as an out-of-towner acquiring a treasured local institution. Before his Pittsburgh-based PNC acquired Baltimore's Mercantile Bankshares Corp. last year, it bought up Washington-based Riggs National Corp., which like Mercantile traces its history in its hometown to the mid-1800s. Last week Rohr traveled to Baltimore to nurture client relationships and to meet with people like H. Furlong Baldwin, who was Mercantile's CEO for 25 years until 2001 and who remains a mover-shaker in the city.

As Susan Rohr approached her mid-30s, it dawned on her that her sexy Victoria's Secret lingerie was made more for her former self -- Susan in her 20s. Or maybe even her teens. "It wasn't fitting so well anymore," says Rohr, 42. "It wasn't quality." A move to the lingerie sections in more-expensive department stores didn't help much. "They do the job," says Rohr, of Patterson Park. "But they're not very pretty. They're not creative. Lots of beige, lots of white. Lots of black." And the ultra high-end lines, such as La Perla, a celebrity favorite, were well out of reach on her salary as a freelance nurse anesthetist.
