The two women who successfully challenged the constitutionality of the federal law banning same-sex marriage received honorary degrees during Johns Hopkins University's commencement ceremonies in Baltimore on Thursday. Many in the audience of students, families and alumni cheered loudly for Edith Windsor and her attorney Roberta Kaplan as they accepted the honors in person. Windsor's case went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, and resulted in a key provision of the Defense of Marriage Act being declared unconstitutional.

Johns Hopkins University will bestow an honorary degree next month on Edith "Edie" Windsor, the woman who successfully challenged the constitutionality of the federal law banning same-sex marriage. Windsor's attorney in last year's historic U.S. Supreme Court victory, Roberta Kaplan, will also receive an honorary degree at the May 22 commencement ceremony on the university's Homewood campus. The two women, lauded as heroes of the gay rights movement, are two of seven "distinguished achievers" being honored by Hopkins.

Roberta M. "Bobbie" Boykin, an attorney and yachtswoman, died Sept. 13 of breast cancer at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. The former Ruxton resident was 49. The daughter of a businessman and a homemaker, Roberta Maccoun Boykin was born in Baltimore and raised in Ruxton. She was a 1981 graduate of Garrison Forest School and made her debut that year at the Bachelors Cotillon. She earned a bachelor's degree in economics in 1985 from Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., where she played varsity lacrosse and was a member of the rowing team.

Roberta "Bobbie" Harrison, matriarch of a celebrated Tilghman Island business that includes a restaurant, inn, charter fishing fleet and seafood operations, died of cancer complications Monday at Memorial Hospital in Easton. She was 74 and lived in Tilghman. Born Roberta Katharine Lambdin in Baltimore and raised on Fayette Street, she moved with her parents to a Talbot County farm in McDaniel as a 7-year-old. Her father, Robert Preston Lambdin, was a boat builder and farmer who was associated with the old Claiborne ferry, which carried autos and passengers before the construction of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

Roberta L. Nevitt, a retired social worker who had worked for the Baltimore County Department of Aging, died July 27 of cancer at the Hospice of the Piedmont in Charlottesville, Va. She was 64. Roberta Lee Nevitt was born in Atlanta and later moved with her family to Baltimore, where she grew up in Govans. She was a 1965 graduate of Eastern High School and earned a bachelor's degree in 1968 from Kalamazoo College in Michigan and a master's in social work from the University of Maryland in 1973.
