I ♥ apples, but it's pretty difficult to find a drink that incorporates the fruit well. (In other words, doesn't make it taste like a disgusting Jolly Rancher-infused swill of sugar.) So it's a bit of a surprise that I've managed to find one now, in the dead of winter, and at Riptide by the Bay in Fells Point, of all places. Actually, the laid-back bar, known more for crab deals in the summer, has a pretty nice cocktail program going on. And its Hot Spiked Homemade Apple Cider ranks high on the list.

NAVARRE BEACH, Fla. - A 45-year-old Hunt Valley man died after he and his family were caught in a riptide Friday in the Gulf of Mexico. Frank Moscardi was pulled from the surf by beach attendants and bystanders. He was the second person in a week to drown on Navarre Beach while trying to save a child from a riptide. Officials with Sunset Beach Service, whose attendants work the beach and are certified as lifeguards, said Moscardi's young son got caught in a strong current. When Moscardi and his wife went to the boy's aid, they were swept into the riptide.

My rule of thumb in ordering at the new Riptide by the Bay in Fells Point is this: If it goes with beer, go for it. That means, for instance, you will be perfectly happy with the steamed crabs. They are homegrown, cooked to order with a seasoning mix that involves a lot of Old Bay but also some other ingredients like extra red pepper. Ours were meaty and not waterlogged. Come to think of it, Riptide may be Fells Point's only crab house. Obrycki's and Mo's are nearby, but they aren't in Fells Point proper.

When Kyle Harrison played lacrosse at Johns Hopkins, his hours were plotted far in advance, almost to the second. There was shooting in the morning, film study in the afternoon, lacrosse practice, a lifting session, more film study in the evening, and of course classes mixed in. Then he got up the next morning and repeated. Life as a Major League Lacrosse player, Harrison has learned, is quite different. Practicing is a luxury. Film study is sparse. For most players, the sport becomes secondary to primary jobs and everyday life.

A YEAR ago, Dennis Rasmussen was chosen the outstanding county executive in America. Today he's looking for work.Howard County Executive Elizabeth Bobo spent four years slipping and sliding between no-growth constituents on the one hand and the spreading anger of developers on the other. She failed to satisfy either. Voters have apparently given her the heave-ho.In Anne Arundel County, Robert Neall appeared to fizzle like a Roman candle and in the end was written off by most polls and pundits, the victim of a populist Democrat named Ted Sophocleus.

A Wicomico County man drowned yesterday evening near the jetty off the southern edge of Ocean City while trying to save his two sons, who were being washed out to sea by a strong riptide, said the head of the city's beach patrol. The name of the 38-year-old Fruitland man was not released. Shortly before 6 p.m., about 20 minutes after lifeguards left their stations, a 911 call was made by someone reporting that two boys, ages 10 and 13, were being pushed out to sea by a southerly riptide and were heading toward the rocky jetty between the public beach and the inlet, said Capt.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End is a movie made at wits' end. There are four or five authentic laughs in the whole 170-minute extravaganza. Here's what reviewers are not supposed to give away: How and why Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), a new Chinese pirate from Singapore, Sao Feng (Chow-Yun Fat), Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) and trade magnate Lord Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander) betray each other.

The Bay Area Volleyball Academy Riptides are a club of 16-year-olds who play at the club level after their high school season ends. They work hard at improving their respective games - and use tough competition to do so. The Riptides got just what they wanted when heading to the East Coast Volleyball Championships, held recently at Penn State University. The Riptides, playing in one of the more competitive levels of the tournament, finished fifth in a 95-team field. This was the best finish for a BAVA team in its seven-year history - the club has teams in a variety of age levels - and it came at the right time.
