As of 9 a.m. Monday, traffic was slow on U.S. 40 eastbound at Ridge Road, due to an accident. An accident involving two vehicles was blocking traffic on Route 180 westbound at Solarex Court in Frederick County. Roadwork was blocking one lane on I-83 northbound at Downes Road in Baltimore County. There were no major delays reported on Baltimore area transit systems.

A Virginia man was killed Friday afternoon when his car was struck head on by another vehicle on Ridge Road in Severn, police said. Ki Sung Lee, 29, of Fredericksburg, was taken to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center where he died of his injuries. Shortly before 3:30 p.m., Lee was northbound on Ridge near Galetown Drive when a 2009 Audi Q7 SUV driven by a 73-year-old Hanover woman failed to negotiate a curve in the road, according to Anne Arundel County Police. The SUV crossed the centerline and struck Lee's 2004 Kia Optima, police said.

A 16-year-old driver collided with a car driven by a Howard County police detective yesterday afternoon in Ellicott City, Howard County police said. The detective, Bernadette Giroux, was turning left at a stop sign at Ellicott Center Drive and Ridge Road about 1 p.m. when her department-issued 1999 Chevrolet Malibu was struck by a 1994 Chevrolet Corsica, which was traveling north on Ridge Road, police said. Giroux, 41, a 12-year veteran of the force, was taken to Howard County General Hospital for evaluation and released, police said.

A woman reported someone came into her apartment and stole her stuff in the first block of Pritchard Avenue on Thursday. A person was caught shoplifting at the Pier One Imports in the 900 block of Old Philadelphia Road on Thursday.

A Mount Airy woman was treated and released from Frederick Memorial Hospital after a Saturday morning accident.According to police reports, Cheryl Lynn Mitchell, 45, of Sugar Maple Court in Frederick, was traveling north on Ridge Road in Mount Airy about 10 a.m. Saturday when she pulled in front of a 1991 Nissan 240 SX driven by Stacey Ann Stepek, 31, of Ridgeville Boulevard in Mount Airy.Ms. Mitchell's car, a 1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass, then collided with Stepek's vehicle in the intersection.

County police called to a Glen Burnie apartment to end a fight early Saturday morning arrested two people on drug charges instead.Police said yesterday they arrived at an apartment building in the first block of Glen Ridge Road shortly after 2:40 a.m. They said they did not find the fight, but a strong odor of PCP from one of the apartments. When the officers knocked on the door, a man let them inside, the police report said.Police found a black canister on top of the refrigerator containing suspected PCP, rolling papers and matches and a glass jar containing suspected PCP in the freezer, an officer said.

OVER THE past month or two, I've received more nominations for additions to the list of Howard County's worst places to drive. U.S. 40 figures prominently on this list. According to David Towle of Ellicott City, the exit from northbound U.S. 29 to Ridge Road is "made worse by those who seem to position themselves in the middle of the road and wait to turn onto Ridge Road toward U.S. 40. Therefore, those that might want to turn right onto Ridge Road from the exit must wait and add to the backup.

The West County of the future might include a Legoland theme park.Danish toy manufacturer Lego Group is considering part of a 400-acre parcel southeast of Baltimore-Washington International Airport as a location for a theme park, said a county development official and the owner of the property.The company is in the "very preliminary" stage of looking at sites all around the country, including the property off Ridge Road, said Jay Winer, chairman of the board of directors of the Anne Arundel Economic Development Corp.

An 11-year-old Carroll County boy died yesterday at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore after he was struck by a car while riding his bike on Ridge Road near Taylorsville, state police reported.Jonathan Thompson of the 3600 block of Ridge Road had left Little George's convenience store in the 3400 block of Ridge about 3: 15 p.m. and was pedaling in the southbound lane when he was struck from behind by a 1982 Dodge Challenger driven by Erica Light, 20, of Woodbine.Police said the boy, riding toward his home about a quarter-mile away, apparently did not judge the speed of the approaching car when he entered the heavily traveled roadway.

Armed with a machete and a handgun, two men robbed three 7-Eleven stores across Baltimore County in about an hour Thursday night before being arrested, police said. A 7-Eleven in White Marsh on Philadelphia Road was the first target, where shortly before 11 p.m., one man armed with a machete jumped over the counter, pointed it at the clerk and demanded money, while the second man with a handgun pointed it at a customer and asked for money. Police said the pair then went to the 7-Eleven on Belair Road in Nottingham, where, around 11:20 p.m., the man with the machete jumped over the counter and the man with a gun walked up to a store clerk, where they demanded cash.

Baltimore County police and fire crews responded Monday to a report of potentially hazardous materials in a rowhouse in the Parkville-Hillendale area. Officer Shawn Vinson, a spokesman for the police department, said that shortly after 5 p.m. officers began investigating a 911 report of a strong odor coming from the basement of a residence in the 8300 block of Ridgely Oak Road. Vinson said the county's bomb squad was called to the scene as a precaution. The incident was largely concluded by 8:30 p.m., with no one injured and no property damaged, according to Vinson and Capt.

Anne Arundel County police officers are looking for a hit-and-run driver who struck a 64-year-old bicyclist in Hanover on Sunday morning, sending him to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. According to the Anne Arundel County Police Department and Shock Trauma Center spokesperson Cindy Rivers, the bicyclist, Stephen Eugene Shenefiel of the 1500 block of Conifer Ridge Lane in Prescott, Arizona, was listed in critical but stable condition as of Sunday night. Officers responded at 7:36 a.m. Sunday to the report of a bicyclist who was struck on Ridge Road near Furnace Avenue.

As of 9 a.m. Thursday, traffic was slow on Route 175 and Ridge Road, due to an accident. Accidents were slowing traffic at Route 3 at Route 32 in Anne Arundel County, Routes 23 and 24 in Carroll County, and Harford Road and The Alameda in Baltimore City. The Conowingo Dam Bridge is closed because the dam is undergoing repairs. Downed wires are blocking traffic on Route 23 at the Pennsylvania state line. The Maryland Transit Administration reports that the light rail line is experiencing a 20 minute delay from Timonium station to Cromwell station

State Highway Administration workers have adjusted traffic lights to help end confusion at a busy Baltimore National Pike intersection in Ellicott City where numerous accidents have occurred.The change came one day after a pickup truck slammed into a Chevrolet Cavalier, seriously injuring a 22-year-old Sykesville woman Tuesday.The number of recent accidents at Ridge Road and Baltimore National Pike was not immediately available, but an official with the State Highway Administration said eight occurred there during the first six months last year, and 25 in 1991.

Annapolis backs off plans for junction Annapolis officials have backed away from a consultant's plan to turn a busy junction on Bay Ridge Road into more of an urban center, noting a heated response from county residents who attended two public meetings. But Mayor Ellen O. Moyer said yesterday there would be more meetings regarding the Annapolis Neck area and more development. "The staff felt like they had been uncivilly bashed and the meetings were counterproductive and we need to have productive meetings," she said.

Strong winds kept emergency officials busy Friday afternoon dealing with downed trees and power lines that forced road closures, while the Coast Guard retrieved a 1,000-foot-long ship that broke free from the Dundalk Marine Terminal. The Atlantic Companion drifted or was blown across the berthing channel, which is about 600 feet wide. But it was soon brought under control by four tugboats, said Coast Guard spokesman Petty Officer 3rd Class Robert Brazzell. Crews responded to calls about fallen trees throughout Baltimore, roofs blown off homes on Falls Road and the partial collapse of a building in the 1500 block of E. Federal St., Fire Department spokesman Chief Kevin Cartwright said.

Police have arrested a man they say is the hooded robber and rapist seen in security camera pictures who accosted two women in separate incidents as they used a Bank of America ATM in the 1900 block of E. Joppa Road in Parkville. Calvin Rodney Butler, 19, of the first block of Spindrift Circle, Lowell Ridge, was arrested at home late Friday night and police say he confessed to both incidents early Saturday. He now faces charges of armed robbery, kidnapping, rape and a first-degree sexual offense.
