When is a skirt not just a skirt? When Ally McBeal wears it.Then it symbolizes many things: Feminism run amok. Bad fashion. Unbridled sexuality. Anorexia. Her minis -- which have crept up an inch this season -- take center stage on "Ally McBeal" on Monday (Fox, 9 p.m.) when the title character's penchant for thigh-high style lands her in contempt of court. But it's not just Ally's apparel that gets fans, critics and TV judges talking. The very existence of this strange single lawyer -- and her offbeat world of unisex bathrooms, dancing babies and colleagues nicknamed Biscuit -- seems to stimulate, aggravate, entertain and inspire.

Time is at something of a standstill in Duncannon, Pa., a no-stoplight town tucked along a bend in the Susquehanna River about 80 miles north of Baltimore. Trains still rattle the windows of houses as they rumble through town, carrying freight through the Pennsylvania coal region. The Doyle Hotel in the center of town looks as if it hasn't been touched in years. But nowhere in Duncannon is time locked in more of a deep freeze than at the Old Sled Works, a former sled factory turned antiques shop at the north end of town.

It is tempting to suggest that a true picture of the Ravens' mettle is coming into focus after three exhibition games, two wins and a loss to the Packers on Saturday night.A few of the pros and cons are indeed becoming clear. But can we say with any certainty how well, or poorly, the Ravens will fare in 1996?No.Exhibition games don't prove anything. As loud and frantic as they get sometimes, they're just glorified scrimmages.Or maybe you didn't notice the name of the kicker who won the game for the Packers in the final seconds.

LOS ANGELES -- Ron Howard had wanted to make a film with Tom Cruise for several years. And he had seen the Australian thriller "Dead Calm" and was impressed with its female star, Nicole Kidman. He told producer Brian Grazer he would like them to star in his epic of Irish immigrants, "Far and Away." But he wondered if they would be agreeable to working together so soon after "Days of Thunder.""I had to sit Ron down and explain to him very carefully that they most likely would be very agreeable because they were engaged to be married," Mr. Grazer says.
