This past weekend my mom, my bridesmaids and I went to pick out the bridesmaid dresses. We allotted about two hours thinking this would be a long and hard process but were in and out in about an hour.  The key was advance planning. My mom and I went ahead of time and picked out the different options we liked. I tried some on and sent pictures of them to the girls ahead of time. Going into the store Saturday, we already had it narrowed down to two dresses.  While I gave the girls options of choosing different styles everyone narrowed in on the same dress: Donna Morgan's "Rhea" in Blue Green.

If you missed Ramona Diaz's "The Learning" and Richard Chisolm's "Cafeteria Man" at the Maryland Film Festival, seize the chance to see them at the AFI Silverdocs festival. If you've seen them already, take my word for it: They're even better the second time around. "The Learning" is like no other teaching film — it sensitizes you in fresh and unexpected ways to the transactions between instructors and students. Director Ramona Diaz follows four Filipino teachers, recruited by the Baltimore public school system, through their first year teaching Mobtown pupils to their first days back home.

Clanging cymbals, jingling bells and moving hips livened the stage at the Baltimore Museum of Art recently. Belly Dance Magic: An Evening with the Daughters of Rhea and Friends, performed by a dance troupe, featured Moorish, Turkish, Egyptian, tribal and cinematic-themed belly-dancing styles, punctuated with aerial circus arts. Belly dancing, a dance form that dates back centuries, traditionally was performed by women for their family members, said Piper Hunt, a Daughter of Rhea who has been belly-dancing since she was a child.

Among the Marylanders in the opening-night audience for Hairspray on Broadway last week was our own television icon Rhea Feikin. Rhea covered the big night for her MPT show Artworks This Week. But the experience went way beyond the professional for her. You see, Miss Rhea had a small role in the 1987 John Waters movie on which the new musical is based. And she says seeing its latest incarnation was absolutely fabulous. Rhea also says she, along with John and several others in his group of friends -- including Pat Moran, Ricki Lake and Patty Hearst -- kept using the same word to describe their feeling that night.

To be inducted into the Silver Circle, a hall of fame established by the Washington chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, a person needs to have spent a quarter-century in the business of entertaining local TV audiences.Around these parts, few fit that bill better than Rhea Feikin, who's spent nearly four decades on Baltimore television, first as a kids' show host and weatherperson on WBAL, Channel 11, then as a frequent on-air presence on MPT.Only thing is, she's a little uneasy about acknowledging that this brands her as a sort of elder statesman.
