Q**You recently said people with Type O blood are universal donors. Isn't it true that the use of O, Rh positive blood in an Rh negative recipient, can create problems?A**That's correct.Type O individuals are universal donors only with respect to the AB blood group antigens. Recipients of a blood transfusion, especially those who have had prior transfusions, may have produced antibodies against one or more of the many other antigens that can be present on the red cells of the transfused blood and lead to serious reactions.

From a billboard in downtown Baltimore, the Mona Lisa smiles that enigmatic, but perhaps not-so-knowing smile. This version appears pregnant -- and wondering one thing. "Who's The Daddy?"It's a question in the minds of many with murky biological relationships, say heads of the Baltimore RH Typing Laboratory, which has begun marketing paternity tests to the public. With the help of the eye-catching billboard, the lab hopes to carve out a niche in a competitive market by supplying the answers, especially outside the courtroom.

Dr. Vincent Freda, 75, who helped develop a vaccine against a disease that afflicted and killed thousands of babies each year, died of respiratory failure May 7 in New York. Dr. Freda was instrumental in the development of Rhogam, a vaccine that enables mothers to deliver Rh-negative blood to their babies and prevent hemolytic disease. The Rh-factor is a protein found on red blood cells. Rh-positive children born to Rh-negative mothers run the risk of having hemolytic disease, in which the mother's body makes antibodies that attack her fetus's blood.

Stuart Godwin Jr. wrote from Chestertown a while back to ask: "What is the relationship between Dew Point and Relative Humidity? Is one dependent on the other?" You bet. Warmer air can hold more water vapor. The RH is a percentage, telling us how close to saturation (100 percent) the air is at ground level. As air cools, it can hold less moisture, and RH rises. At the dew-point temperature, it's saturated (100 percent), and the vapor condenses as rain or fog.

If last year's River Hill football team resembled a track team, with speedy scatbacks Evan Griffin and Justin Arn combining for more than 3,200 yards from scrimmage, this year's team would be better characterized as a rugby squad. The Hawks (3-0) won their 27th consecutive game Friday night at Atholton (0-3), 28-6, behind a pounding running game led by Kalonji Moore, Cory Daniel and Jon Kanda. All three players stand at least 6-feet tall and weight at least 200 pounds. "We have a lot of athletic players on offense, our running backs are big and strong and can break tackles, and our linemen just give us a good push.

Howard held off defending champion Centennial at the 35th annual Howard County Championship meet, April 22 at the Howard Community College pool. Because swimming is not a sport that is sanctioned by the county's high school athletic program, the event is sponsored by the Columbia Clippers club team. Each school had a captain that recruited his or her classmates to form a team. Although Howard County public school swimmers get only one chance a year to represent their high school in the pool, many local swimmers will be continuing in college next year.

River Hill girls soccer coach Brian Song has seen his share of closely-contested games against Howard County rival Glenelg with the outcomes not decided until the latter stages of games. In Monday's early-season showdown for first place, he challenged his team to start fast and not look back. They responded. Controlling the first 10 minutes and making the most of their chances, the No. 6 Hawks got early goals from Kathryn Arensmeier and Sheridan Street five minutes apart and protected the lead with poise in coming away with a sturdy 2-0 home win over the No. 5 Gladiators.

Even though Brent Kluge had never played in a River Hill football game until last week, he might have wanted to beat Wilde Lake, the Hawks' top Howard County rival, more than any of his teammates. A year ago, he played for Hereford when Wilde Lake ended the Bulls' season in the playoffs, so Kluge had a score to settle. The junior ran for 152 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries as No. 4 River Hill rolled over the No. 13 Wildecats, 27-0, on Friday night for its 30th consecutive victory.

As the second half of Tuesday's boys soccer game between perennial state powers Fallston and visiting River Hill wore on, it became more and more apparent that a deciding goal would have to be earned through hard work and making the most of an opportunity. River Hill senior midfielder Tony Riso, whose tireless play in the middle epitomized the effort of both teams, proved to be the right player for the job in the game's closing minutes. With a free kick sent in by Jason Plumhoff lingering near Fallston's goal, Riso headed home the game-winner from a tough angle in close with less than four minutes to play, giving the No. 6 Hawks a hard-earned 2-1 win over the No. 5 Cougars.
