The UMBC Retrievers' long climb back to respectability hit a serious detour last night in a showdown for second place with Big South rival Charleston Southern at UMBC Fieldhouse. The Buccaneers used a 21-2 run early in the second half to gain a 49-31 advantage and survived UMBC's furious late rally to win, 72-62, before a crowd of 1,728.It was the fifth straight conference victory for Charleston Southern (12-9, 8-3). UMBC dropped to 9-12, 6-5 in the league. And the Retrievers, who had used a suffocating defense to win eight of their previous 12 games, had the tables turned last night as they managed to shoot only 32 percent (21-for-65)

Morgan State's game plan against UMBC last night wasn't very complicated - the Bears simply wanted to make sure the Retrievers didn't get on a roll. That plan worked to perfection as Morgan State held UMBC to 20 field goals and 37 percent shooting. The Bears dictated the pace, stayed in command and never trailed en route to a 67-60 victory last night before 1,461 in their home opener at Hill Field House. Morgan State coach Todd Bozeman said the Bears wanted to keep a watchful eye on UMBC point guard Jay Greene, ranked fourth in the nation last year in assists per game.

The academic status of former UMBC basketball player Sonique Nixon was reported incorrectly in last Thursday's Sun. After the fall 1993 semester, Mr. Nixon's grade-point average fell below the school's newer, more stringent standards, and he was ruled ineligible and placed on academic probation for the spring 1994 semester. He remained a student at the school and is currently in good standing academically at UMBC.The Sun regrets the error. It seems to be a team that always walks around with a cloud over its head.

DURHAM, N.C. -- When this journey began, the UMBC men's soccer team thought success would be measured by gaining respect. Yesterday, having had victory within reach, even "success" was no consolation for blowing a lead and an opportunity to oust No. 1 Duke at home.In the 102nd minute of the game, regulation having passed and the first overtime drawing to an end, Duke freshman midfielder Trevor Perea scored a bizarre, game-winning goal off a corner kick to give the top-seeded Blue Devils a 4-3 victory in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
