A 64-year-old sailor was rescued after he became injured on his boat on the Severn River Saturday. According to the Coast Guard, a crew member aboard a 22-foot sailboat called the Joe Joe Bean called for rescue workers around noon Saturday to help a sailor suffering from head, neck and back injuries aboard the boat, at the mouth of the Severn River near Annapolis. Emergency workers responded from the Coast Guard, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, the Maryland Natural Resources Police and the Anne Arundel County Fire Department.

Barack Obama has not been a perfect president. Millions are still suffering from a weak economy, vitally important issues like climate change and immigration remain all but unaddressed, and most disappointingly, the promise of a new politics to move us beyond a long and bitter partisan divide remains painfully unfulfilled. But he has been a very good president. For all the promises on which he has fallen short, he has kept many others. He has provided steady, pragmatic leadership in trying times, and he has set the stage for a stronger, more sustainable America to emerge.

Among the 56 calls for medical and fire-rescue service the Arbutus Volunteer Fire Department received in the week of Oct. 21-28 before Hurricane Sandy hit the state of Maryland were the following: Winslow Park Drive at Maiden Choice Lane, 12:48 a.m. Oct. 27. Crews from the Arbutus volunteer station and Catonsville and Halethorpe career stations responded to the report of a person in Catonsville with a breathing problem. One seriously injured person taken to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

Among the 74 calls for medical and fire-rescue service the Arbutus Volunteer Fire Department received during the period Oct. 14-21 were the following: Greystone Road, 1200 block, 11:57 p.m. Oct. 17. Crews responded to the report of person going into cardiac arrest in Arbutus and transported a critically ill person to a local hospital. Highridge Street, 5400 block, 9:12 p.m. Oct 17. Crews responded to the report of a person having fallen in Arbutus and transported a seriously injured person to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

A 21-year-old woman was taken to a regional trauma center with serious injuries following a single vehicle accident in Joppa Friday night, according to the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company. Just after 10 p.m. Friday, units from fire company's Joppa, Joppatowne and Edgewood stations were dispatched to Route 7 (Philadelphia Road) and Joppa Farm Road for a motor vehicle collision, according to the fire company's public information officer. The first arriving unit reported a single vehicle accident with the driver still inside.

Baltimore police's Marine Unit rescued a 41-year man who fell into the harbor near Canton Saturday afternoon, officials said. Around 1:30 p.m., police were called to the 3200 block of Boston Street in Southeast Baltimore for a report of a man who had fallen into the water. The marine unit responded and pulled the man out, police said. The man told officers he was sitting on a pier when he lost his balance and fell into the water, police said. He was taken to an area hospital and police do not believe his injuries are life-threatening.

One man was rescued from the basement of his burning Edgewood home early Thursday morning. Few details were available, but a spokesman for the Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association said the person was the only one home. The fire in the single-family home was reported at 5:30 a.m. in the 200 block of Kennard Avenue, according to the association's Facebook page. Firefighters from Abingdon, Joppa and Bel Air volunteer fire companies and Aberdeen Proving Ground Fire Department responded to battle the blaze, which was reported as "well-involved.

Baltimore's Fire Department is overhauling its rescue teams and converting its Locust Point station into a new command center — moves designed to increase the availability of firefighters trained to work in deep water, collapsed buildings and other dangerous locations. Fire Chief James S. Clack said the changes — which come after a December accident that shut down the dive team — are needed to address shortcomings in the agency.
