Rep. Elijah E. Cummings is requesting that a group whose affiliates have challenged the legitimately of thousands of voter registrations, including some in Maryland, turn over documents to demonstrate how it determines which registrations to target. In a letter to Texas-based True the Vote, the Baltimore Democrat argues that the group and its affiliates have been unsuccessful in identifying people who are incorrectly registered. Instead, Cummings argues, the groups are jeopardizing to disenfranchise people who are correctly registered to vote.

Komen Maryland counts on Race for the Cure to pay for programs and support services related to breast cancer , but as the date for the 20th annual event approaches the group is facing steep declines in the number of people signed up and the amount of money raised. A little more than two weeks before the Oct. 21 event in Hunt Valley, registrations for the run/walk are off 42 percent and donations are down 55 percent, Komen Maryland disclosed Thursday. The organization blames the weak economy and tightened purse strings, but marketing experts say it's more likely fallout from the controversial decision by its parent organization earlier this year to stop funding the social services organization Planned Parenthood.

Baltimore County police had received reports of suspicious people in a Dundalk neighborhood when they stopped Joshua Michael Lopez, who they said fit the description. That seemingly routine stop ended with Lopez, 22, dead after police said he scuffled with the officers, leaving the family of the Navy quartermaster assigned to a ship docked in Norfolk wondering how and why police shot and killed the unarmed man. The family is in a "bit of a shock, trying to find answers. Everything is just up in the air. We have no clue" how he died, said Lopez's mother, Tosha, who lives in Texas.

For the first time, Maryland residents can register to vote online — a move officials say will make it easier to get on the rolls and avoid mistakes. The State Board of Elections quietly launched the new system last month, and Gov. Martin O'Malley's office began promoting it this week. A few hundred people have already given the online system a try, elections officials said. The General Assembly passed the law allowing online registration last year, and Maryland is now the 10th state to offer it. Arizona paved the way in 2002.
