ASHBURN, Va. -- Reggie Brooks doesn't talk as if he's making a comeback this year."I know what I'm capable of doing. I'm not here to impress anybody. I'm just here to play football and do my job," the Washington Redskins running back said after he led the team in rushing in the exhibition season.Brooks, who will be backing up Terry Allen when the season opens Sunday at RFK against the Arizona Cardinals, was impressive in the final two exhibition games for a player whose rushing yardage total dipped from 1,063 yards in his rookie season in 1993 to 297 last season.

Poly football coach Augie Waibel called it the best catch he ever made. But the reception, which occurred in his kitchen two Sundays ago, cost him a slight shoulder separation.Waibel, 61, was sitting at the kitchen table of his Carney home watching his 9-month-old grandson, Brenden, pound on the tray top of his highchair about seven feet away.Suddenly, Brenden hammered the top of the tray so that it popped loose. The infant toppled head-first toward the hard floor. In an instant, however, his grandfather, a former linebacker and center at Southern-B and the University of Maryland, lunged from his chair with a burst of energy he didn't realize he still had."

ASHBURN, Va. -- Reggie Brooks can understand Brian Mitchell's frustration.Brooks won the job as starting running back for the Washington Redskins with his 154-yard breakthrough against the Philadelphia Eagles a week ago. That meant a demotion for Mitchell, who had started the first three games and was trying to find a niche for himself as a running back instead of a kick returner.Mitchell declined to comment on the move until yesterday when he said, "Of course, I feel [it's] unfair. Some of the things, I feel in my mind, I can't say. If I said it, it'd be bad for me and it'd be bad for everybody, so I just keep a lot of stuff to myself."
