Among those in the know, Baltimore's first Red Door Spa has caused the kind of excitement even a warm shea butter body melt might not soothe. One of the most famous beauty palace in the United States opens its 27th salon and day spa today in the Village of Cross Keys on Falls Road - 94 years after Elizabeth Arden opened her first spa on New York's Fifth Avenue. The bespectacled man looks young and eager. Like an insurance salesman ready to get crazy with an actuarial table or two. Dressed in a collared dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, a red tie and gray pants, he's holding a piece of paper in his hands. He's in western Howard County, on secluded Browns Bridge Road, sparsely lined with large houses hidden by trees. He's standing on someone's front porch at 10:24 in the morning, knocking on a storm door. The owner isn't home, but he's been burglarized before, so he has hidden a video camera to catch the next person who breaks in. This will be that person.

Two brothers admitted in federal court yesterday that they imported more than 100 kilograms of cocaine and heroin from both coasts, sold the drugs to dealers on the streets of Northwest Baltimore and hid their proceeds by investing in nightclubs, suburban real estate and high-performance cars. The hearing in U.S. District Court in Baltimore gave federal prosecutors close to a clean sweep in the widespread racketeering case. Twelve of the 13 indicted defendants - several of whom appeared to live the quiet suburban life of minivans, cul-de-sac basketball courts and backyard barbecues - have pleaded guilty to helping operate a decade-old drug organization that trafficked large amounts of drugs in the city's Park Heights neighborhood.

IN A PAPER HOUSE WITH A RED door and a yellow rug, Madame Butterfly is weeping. Her husband, the feckless Lieutenant Pinkerton, has failed to return after years at sea, and now she realizes that he has abandoned her. Overcome by shame, she vows to kill herself. This scene marks the climax of Puccini's operatic masterpiece Madame Butterfly, and, on a hot summer day as Baltimore artist Morgan Monceaux struggled to translate his vision of it into paint, the opera's sonorous harmonies and plangent melodies resounded through the rooms of his sweltering West Baltimore rowhouse.
