State prison officials were investigating yesterday the stabbing of a 35-year-old inmate at the Maryland House of Correction Annex. Lorenzo Hazel was stabbed multiple times in his upper body about 7 p.m. Monday in a recreation room at the maximum-security prison in Jessup, prison officials said. Correctional officers found prison-made knives in the recreation room, but no one had been charged yesterday, said Lt. Priscilla Doggett, a spokeswoman for the Division of Correction. Hazel, who is serving a life term for murder and armed robbery, was in critical condition yesterday at Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, officials said.

Matt Porterfield's restless and moving "Putty Hill" is about a pocket of working-class Baltimoreans reacting to the overdose death of a 24-year-old man. Mt. Washington firehouse call is close to home Firefighters assigned to Engine 45 and Truck 27 on Glen Avenue in Mount Washington didn't have far to go battle a blaze yesterday -- it began inside their firehouse. The incident began about 1 p.m., when a firefighter noticed smoke coming from a second-floor recreation room at the station in the 2700 block of Glen Ave. and alerted others, said Chief Kevin Cartwright, a Fire Department spokesman. Cartwright said the fire, apparently the result of an overloaded circuit or a frayed wire, set a couch on fire, causing smoke to fill the recreation room.

"They tell us, `You're lucky to get what you've got,' " Lawler said, referring to officials who schedule the fields and gyms.
