Area schools and literacy programs seek volunteers to help children and adults improve reading skills and to assist in related projects. Among them are: Curtis Bay Elementary School, 43O1 W. Bay Ave., Baltimore, is seeking volunteers to listen to children read during the 100 Book Challenge, a program designed to increase reading levels by having children read independently. Volunteers would be needed daily during the school year from 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Contact: Jackie Griswald, 410-396-1730.

Area schools and literacy programs seek volunteers to help children and adults to improve reading skills and to assist in related projects. Among them are: Baltimore Police Athletic League, volunteers/mentors to work with inner-city youths ages 7 to 17 on reading, math, sports, arts and character development at 18 locations citywide. Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday. Contact: Rita Chappelle, 410- 396-2166.
