A Baltimore police officer rushing to a call with her emergency lights and siren activated collided with another car at a Northwest Baltimore intersection, injuring the drivers of both vehicles, city police said yesterday. Officer Troy Harris, a police spokesman, said Officer Channon Rankin, 24, and the other driver, Omar Mooring, 33, suffered the same injuries - a fractured leg and a concussion. She was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center; Mooring was taken to Sinai Hospital. The officer's marked car burst into flames after the accident at Belvedere and Beaufort avenues in the Pimlico section.

Bryan Shumaker hasn't yet figured out how to take his Winters Mill girls soccer team over the edge, though the Falcons coach knows he's getting awfully close. For the third time in five games this season, Winters Mill settled for a tie last night. Despite dominating portions of their Carroll County game against host Westminster and outshooting the Owls 25-14, the Falcons time and again came up empty against a stubborn defense in a 1-1, double-overtime draw. It was the second tie between the two rivals in as many seasons.

On Friday July 22, 2005, CHARLES GARRETT RANKIN, of Mt. Airy, Maryland, died from non small cell lung cancer at the age of 68. He is survived by his wife Rose E. Rankin (nee Vetula), beloved father of Lowell Rankin of PA, Ja'nae Rankin of TN, Terri Mc Cormick and husband Bob of Rockville, Leah Pearce of Rockville, Sarah Rankin of Mt. Airy; grandfather of MG, AG, KM, RP, MM, RP; sister of Suzanne Horton of Dallas, TX, Thula Sims of Houston, TX, Pat Varner of Richmond, VA. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 P.M. on Tuesday, July 26, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd.

Jack Rankin Schroeder, an artist who painted the Eastern Shore's wildlife and who twice won the Maryland duck stamp contest, died of cancer Aug. 6 at his home in Arlington, Va. He was 76. Mr. Schroeder also helped preserve the workshop and barbershop of the well-known Crisfield decoy makers Lem and Steve Ward, whose works he depicted. Born in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Mr. Schroeder served in the Navy's medical corps during the Korean War and moved to Chestertown to study English literature at Washington College.
