LANDOVER -- The Washington Capitals will have three players -- the most since 1985 -- on the Wales Conference team in the 43rd NHL All-Star Game Jan. 18 at the Spectrum in Philadelphia.Defenseman Kevin Hatcher, who will be making his third consecutive All-Star appearance, will be joined by left wing Randy Burridge and goalie Don Beaupre.The past two years Washington has had only Hatcher in the game. In 1985 the Capitals had four players on the team: defensemen Scott Stevens and Rod Langway, center Bobby Carpenter and right wing Mike Gartner.

Washington Capitals left wing Randy Burridge will miss the entire season after undergoing reconstructive surgery on his right knee yesterday.Team doctor Richard Grossman repaired a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in an operation at Sibley Hospital in Washington.Burridge had injured the right knee Sept. 5. He had been expected to be out of the Capitals' lineup until January because of surgery on his left knee, which was injured in Game 2 of last season's playoff series against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Dominik Hasek made 20 saves and Randy Burridge had a goal and an assist to lead the Buffalo Sabres to a 4-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers last night.The Sabres ended a three-game losing streak and won their first game since defeating Ottawa on opening night.Hasek needed to make just three saves in the first period and turned aside eight shots in the second period before allowing a power-play goal to Zdeno Ciger 3:18 into the final period.Mike Peca scored his second goal of the season, a power-play effort, 2:20 into the first period to give the Sabres a 1-0 lead.

The Washington Capitals had yesterday off, but general manager David Poile and coach Terry Murray were in their offices.Poile was doing "desk work," and Murray was looking at films of Saturday night's 4-3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres.The win was the Capitals' first in seven tries."The win is a huge relief for everyone," said Poile. "The trick is to pick up on the positive momentum. But we're 1-6, and we're absolutely not happy with where we are. How could anyone be? But we've got our first win, and that makes it a lot better."

LANDOVER -- Washington Capitals coach Jim Schoenfeld had some choice words for his players when they were trailing, 1-0, at the end of the first period last night. The players took his fiery words to heart and dominated the New York Islanders the rest of the evening for a 3-1 victory before a sell-out crowd of 18,130 at the USAir Arena."He [Schoenfeld] let us have it after the first period," said Randy Burridge who produced the first of three power-play goals for Washington last night.The Capitals had entered the game with one goal in their past 26 power-play chances.
