Days End Farm Horse Rescue will have an open house fund-raiser to help abused horses from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at 17601 Frederick Road, Mount Airy.The nonprofit organization takes in and cares for abused horses.Activities will include tours of the farm, music, face painting, pony rides, clowns, a petting zoo, 4-H Horsing Around games and a bake sale. An art auction, a locally sponsored wine tasting and a beer sampling from the Fordham Micro Brewery will highlight a fund-raiser Saturday night for Arundel Habitat for Humanity. The event will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Homestead Gardens in Davidsonville. Funds will be used to help eliminate substandard housing in Anne Arundel County. The cost per ticket is $35 and may be purchased online at www.arundelhabitat.org, at the door, or by calling 410-384-9212, Ext. 10. Arundel Habitat for Humanity has built more than 57 houses over the past 16 years for low-income families and is seeking to build 50 more over the next decade.

An evening of food and culture from Bosnia-Herzegovina will take place at Western Maryland College tonight as a fund-raiser for the relief effort for that region.The event, which is open to the public, begins at 6 p.m. in the Decker College Center Dining Porch. It is supported by the college's department of political science and the honors program.The evening's main speaker will be Sven Alkalaj, a representative of Bosnia's embassy in the United States. He will be joined by others who have been involved in the humanitarian aid effort and Bosnian citizens who recently left Sarajevo.

The Arthur Slade Home School Association's fund-raiser, "Manhattan After Dark," will be presented April 26 and 27 at the school, 120 Dorsey Road, Glen Burnie.Doors and restaurant open at 6 p.m., and entertainment begins at 8 p.m.The school will be transformed into a number of distinctive nightclubs to create the atmosphere of New York's night life. Professional singers, comedians and musicians will perform.Tickets are $9 for Friday and $10 for Saturday and may be purchased in advance or at the door.

Former Baltimore Mayor Clarence H. Du Burns and his campaign officials said money raised at a $500-a-plate fund-raiser today will allow then to pay for the television advertising they couldn't afford four years ago.Allen Quille Sr., Burns' campaign manager, said the breakfast fund-raiser should bring in about $50,000.Burns is trying to unseat Mayor Kurt L. Schmoke in this year's mayoral campaign. In 1987, Schmoke unseated Burns, who was seeking a full four-year term."This did it. This morning should give us the money we need for TV ads," said Quille.

Friends of Gregory Wilson, the 3-year-old poster child for the Maryland chapter of the Leukemia Society of America who died last Sunday, have scheduled a pancake breakfast and fund-raiser to help his family pay medical and funeral expenses.The event is scheduled for Saturday at St. Ignatius Church hall in Hickory.Kathy Willis, spokeswoman for the Gregory Wilson Leukemia Fund, said people have been working on the fund-raiser for two months. Although she did not know the extent of Gregory's medical bills, the youngster had had two major operations.

WASHINGTON -- Newly disclosed Commerce Department documents indicate that controversial fund-raiser John Huang was considered an expert on Asian affairs when he worked at the agency and had a voice on U.S.-Asia commercial policy, despite Clinton administration assertions that his duties there were largely administrative.The 1995 documents, obtained from congressional sources yesterday, were written by Assistant Commerce Secretary Charles F. Meissner in December 1995, as Huang, who later became the central figure in a scandal over Asian fund raising by the Democratic National Committee, was leaving the department to become a fund-raiser for the party.

Annapolis Mayor Alfred A. Hopkins plans to run for re-election in 1993, and he's holding a fund-raiser April 2 to get a head start."The only thing that would stop me is if my doctor told me not to run,"said Hopkins, 65. "But medically, I have no problems."The theme of the event is decidedly patriotic. Titled "Red, White& Blues," the event is billed as a celebration of the success of Operation Desert Storm and signs that the state and local economy is improving.Hopkins could net as much as $10,000 from the event, moneyhe said he will use to begin his 1993 re-election campaign.

A party for volunteers who will help at the American Cancer Society's June fund-raiser, "Relay for Life '97," was held yesterday evening at the DSG Building in east Columbia.The party, designed on a "M*A*S*H" theme, included a Corporal Klinger impersonation by Ellicott City attorney Sam Israel, who is a team recruitment coordinator for the fund-raiser. The party was intended to build enthusiasm and prepare team captains to recruit runners and walkers for the 24-hour relay.This will be the second year for the "Relay for Life '97" in Howard.
