He was born on Preakness Day three years ago, a day on which Pat Day rode Timber Country to a narrow victory over local favorite Oliver's Twist.So, naturally, he was named P Day in honor of both occasions.And yesterday, the dark brown colt had a field day, romping to a 7 1/2 -length triumph over four rivals in the $100,000 Northern Dancer Stakes at Laurel Park.There wasn't much competition for Charlie Hadry's entry after speedster Raghib relented at the six-furlong mark of the 1 1/8 -mile test.

As a wide receiver in the National Football League, Baltimore Raven Qadry Ismail is accustomed to signing million-dollar contracts. But yesterday, the fleet-footed player turned the contract tables on pupils at Woodlawn Middle School. Ismail, 30, asked 1,065 pupils to sign a four-part pact. Speaking at separate assemblies for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders, Ismail called on the youngsters to respect themselves and others, achieve satisfactory attendance, maintain at least a C average and observe school rules.

Among the horses who have beaten Raghib are Coronado's Quest and Lil's Lad.So, it was no surprise that the New York invader was established as the favorite in yesterday's $75,000 Deputed Testamony Stakes at Pimlico Race Course.And the son of Phone Trick upheld his billing with a hard-earned length victory over P Day, who nosed out Farwell Look for the place.Raghib is trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, but assistant Bob Witham was here for the Maryland-bred stakes over 1 1/8 miles."He's growing up and getting better," said Witham of the winner, who covered the distance in 1 minute, 50 3/5 seconds over a fast track.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Raghib "Rocket" Ismail, who has collected 1,726 all-purpose yards and six touchdowns so far this season, was asked yesterday to name his most memorable plays this year.The Notre Dame junior didn't mention the 94-yard kickoff return against Miami (Fla.), or his 44-yard run that sealed the big win over Tennessee.Instead, Ismail spoke of two plays by his teammates.One was the interception by linebacker Michael Stonebreaker that helped spur a comeback against Michigan. Another was the sack by Chris Zorich that ended last week's win over Southern Cal."

Irish's Ismail expected to rocket into the NFLRaghib "Rocket" Ismail, Notre Dame's talented flanker and return specialist, has called a news conference in South Bend, Ind., today, where university officials expect he will announce his decision to enter the National Football League draft.Ismail was a 1990 All-American and a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. In three seasons, he has returned five kickoffs for touchdowns, one short of the National Collegiate Athletic Association record set by Southern Cal's Anthony Davis from 1970-72.

Raghib "Rocket" Ismail launched his pro football career Saturday night by signing a four-year contract with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League for $6.5 million per year.Ismail, a part-time wide receiver, part-time running back and full-time return specialist for Notre Dame who chose to turn pro after his junior season, was expected to be the top selection in the National Football League draft yesterday by the Dallas Cowboys, who had traded for the No. 1 pick.But Ismail signed with the Argonauts, and yesterday he said that he had agreed to play in Toronto "several days ago."

Bruce McNall, owner of the Toronto Argonauts, is starting to make a habit of meeting with unsigned Washington Redskins.McNall, who recently had a dinner meeting with the team's top draft choice, Desmond Howard, in Los Angeles, met yesterday with quarterback Mark Rypien in Portland, Ore.Rypien was in Portland for a golf tournament and McNall was there for Toronto's Canadian Football League exhibition game against the Calgary Stampeders. The CFL is considering expanding to Portland.McNall, who also owns the Los Angeles Kings of the NHL, has the CFL rights to Rypien, and Calgary has the rights to Howard.
