The production of "The Mystery of Irma Vep" running at Everyman Theatre has a portrait that drips blood, an Egyptian sarcophagus, hidden passages out of which characters unexpectedly pop, a mad woman in the dungeon and such deliberately tongue-in-cheek dialogue as, "He killed the wrong wolf!" As outlandish as the onstage antics might seem, they can't hold a snuffed-out candle to the frenzied activity taking place backstage. Three dressers and a stagehand conduct a carefully choreographed dance that allows the show's two actors to make up to 50 full costume changes during each performance, complete with Victorian-era petticoats, wigs, false teeth and top hats - often in two seconds or less.

As President Barack Obama continues to struggle with the economy, his annual budgets and his attempts to unravel the catastrophe of the terrorist attack in Banghazi, Libya where four Americans were killed, I thought examining Mr. Obama's political background before he took office could possibly provide some answers to these numerous conflicts which appear to be haunting him. On the basis of Mr. Obama's strong campaign oratory, he was elected as...

Regarding your article "Suburbs to get school reform" (Sept. 6), might I suggest that all teachers be required to teach in several different schools within their districts over the course of their career, rather than be assigned to the same school year after year? For example, an elementary teacher might be reassigned to a different school every four or five years until they have had experience in a number of district schools. Then the cycle could start all over again. Such a system would provide a fairer, more equal basis for judging a teacher's abilities and performance at evaluation time.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai made a very weak excuse recently when, in response to recent insurgent strikes in Kabul, he stated that the "attack showed a 'failure' by Afghanistan intelligence and NATO" ("Attacks in Kabul show vulnerability," April 17). In my opinion, this statement should be considered an extreme embarrassment to Mr. Karzai. As anyone else who is as keenly interested as I am should be well aware, this raging conflict between the Taliban rebels and the Afghanistan government and their military forces is, and has been for some time, in desperate need of much stronger support from the U.S and NATO troops in order to quell a challenging problem.

It was most disturbing to read about the recent standoff between local police and the Iraqi Army at a U.S. air base in Kirkuk. Until the Iraqi democracy became more firmly entrenched in order to prevent such problems, civil war or a takeover by Iran or other radical forces remains a threat. The biggest question now is whether President Obama can summon the political will to reverse his earlier decision to withdraw our troops from Iraq by the end of December. Unfortunately, I do not believe this is a move the president will make, which is truly disappointing as it will weaken our image around the world.
