Monsignor James Vincent Hobbs, former rector of the Basilica of the Assumption who during his tenure oversaw a two-year, $32 million restoration of the 200-year-old structure, died Monday of cardiac arrest at his Thurmont home. He was 81. James Vincent Hobbs was born and raised in Thurmont, where his father owned a grocery store and his mother was proprietor of a hardware store. He attended Frederick County public schools as an elementary school student before entering St. Anthony's parochial school in Emmitsburg.

Kayaking Marylanders Parsons, Queen make Olympics Bethesda's Scott Parsons secured a third straight U.S. Olympic team berth in men's kayaking with a dominant victory Saturday at a world cup event in Cardiff, Wales, and Darnestown's Caroline Queen narrowly secured her first Olympic team slot in the women's event, edging longtime friend Ashley Nee , also of Darnestown. Jose Soto doesn't pay attention to politics in Frederick County. He's new to town and spends much of his time working at an apple-processing plant in Pennsylvania. But he heard something a few weeks ago about the county making English its official language. "I think it's a little racist," Soto said as he stopped by a Latino grocery store in Frederick before heading to work one afternoon last week. The 32-year-old was born in Guatemala and emigrated to Los Angeles as a child. Last month, the county became the first in Maryland to declare English its official language, though supporters of the measure acknowledge the move was largely symbolic because county business is done in English now. Anne Arundel and Queen Anne's counties are considering similar laws as well — part of a nationwide movement that supporters tout as a way to help immigrants assimilate.

A Millington woman struck a Chestertown man while driving early Saturday on Route 544 in Queen Anne's County, and then was hit by another vehicle while calling 911, Maryland State Police said. Both were killed in the accidents. The deceased were identified as Megan Pulleyn, 26, and Thomas Gustafson, 57. Police said Pulleyn was driving a 2007 Toyota Camry west on Route 544 near Route 290 when she struck Gustafson, a hunter who was in the roadway at the time of the incident, according to a preliminary investigation.

Paula Deen has long bragged about her unhealthy cooking, but now the southern chef has been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes . While she said she is not changing her diet, her diagnosis could be a wake up call to people still clinging to fatty, sugar-filled diets. Deen said she has always eaten in moderation, but while Type 2 diabetes can be hereditary it is also diet related. Deen made her announcement while at the same time saying she was promoting a diabetes drug.
