All right. Try to picture this: The Queen (yeah, of England) is walking through the turnstiles. . . . Sure, the turnstiles. What do you think? This is America, Jack. All men are created equal. E Pluribus Unum, etc. OK, she's walking through the turnstiles and it's Gatorade Squeeze Bottle Night, so does she just take the bottle and go to her seat or does she ask for about six free ones for the relatives back home at the palace? If she's anything like you and me (she probably isn't; I mean, would you wear that frumpy, blue housecoat-looking thing she always has on?

Christopher Barreca's set for "The Queen and the Rebels" makes Center Stage's Head Theater look more ramshackle than when it was under construction a year ago -- but in this case, that means the show looks great. The setting is an abandoned town hall in an unnamed European country in the midst of civil war. The windows are boarded, the walls are banked with sandbags and the back half is flooded. In the last act there's a magnificent moment when the heart of the play is encapsulated in a single image: Demonstrating what he'd do if he got his hands on the escaped queen, a soldier slits open a sandbag; as the sand forms an eerie mist against the shadows, a prostitute who has been mistaken for the queen wraps a blanket around her shoulders like a cloak and strides across the floor with regal bearing.

ONE OF THE most interesting things about the Center Stage production of Ugo Betti's ''The Queen and the Rebels'' is the set.Staged in the Head Theater of the Center Stage complex, the production makes use of the entire east end of the room, the players walking or running to get to their assigned locations and deliver their lines. To the rear, sandbags line the wall below boarded windows. One person, who attended the last preview performance, said it was disconcerting, that watching the play in this much playing area was a little like watching a tennis match, but that is about all the excitement this production has.It is very well acted.
