The Queen Anne Belvedere row of apartments on North Charles Street is one of the most historic places to live in Baltimore - a rare, intact block of late Victorian architecture. It's also one of the most up-to-date places to live, following an $8 million restoration and modernization that has prepared it for occupancy by a new generation of residents. At 10 a.m. on Thursday, Gov. Parris N. Glendening will preside over a ribbon-cutting ceremony that will mark substantial completion of 18 months of reconstruction in the 1200 block of N. Charles St. The 100,000-square-foot development is one block south of the University of Baltimore's campus.

It's tough to beat an orginal. When the Queen Anne Village townhouse community was built more than 25 years ago, it was the first neighborhood of its kind in the Owings Mills area. It was a haven for first-time homebuyers who were beginning the migration to the northwestern growth area of Baltimore County. Since then, the stretch of Reisterstown Road that serves as a gateway to Owings Mills has matured and expanded with a cornucopia of developments springing forth-- McDonogh Township, Garrison, Overlook; Grey Rock and Avalon.

Four years ago, in what was hailed then as the largest land preservation deal in Maryland history, officials paid $8 million to the owner of Chino Farms in Queen Anne's County to ensure that its 5,000 acres along the Chester River would remain home to bald eagles, endangered squirrels and thousands of ducks and geese. Now, 114 suburban homes are planned on a neighboring farm, and more may be on the way for Chino's other borders. The situation, playing out now before the county's planning commission, highlights the growing challenges of preserving farming in Maryland as suburbia spreads across the state.
