A Baltimore County parent who stepped in to bring warmth and cheer back to the high school that had a chilling cafeteria shooting was recognized Friday during the state's annual Parent Involvement Matters awards. The Maryland State Department of Education awarded Mary Kavanagh with the JoAnne L. Carter Memorial Award, in recognition of her special work with Perry Hall High School, according to a news release from the department. Kavanagh received the award, named in honor of Carter, a former deputy state superintendent who lost her battle with cancer in 2009, for a mural project she launched after a student opened fire at Perry Hall on the first day of school.

As a senior at Queen Anne's County High last year, Damonte Dodd dominated small-school competition as the Eastern Shore's first Division I basketball recruit in years. As a post-grad player in Woodstock, Va., this winter, the Maryland-bound big man was one of five high-major recruits in Massanutten Military Academy's starting lineup. Going from an unquestioned go-to guy in high school to a secondary option on a loaded prep school team was a smooth transition for the future Terp, according to Massanutten coach Chad Myers.

Michael Shakespeare's best year at Maryland was 2010 when as a sophomore, he scored five goals. Last year, however, that number dropped to one. But it wasn't due to ineffectiveness or injury. Shakespeare spent last season as one of the team's top short-stick defensive midfielders, concentrating on limiting opponents rather than scoring on them. But this year, the senior is back on the offensive end, and he punctuated his return with the first hat trick of his career in the No. 8 Terps' 16-11 victory over host Georgetown Friday night at Multi-Sport Field in Washington, D.C. “It's nice,” Shakespeare said of his familiar role.

Cautious optimism mixed with intrigue might be the best way to describe Dale Becraft 's first impression of Damonte Dodd . Becraft, a former Chesapeake College coach and Washington College assistant, had taken the boys basketball job at Queen Anne's County High in Centreville in 2007. The following fall he was introduced to Dodd, then a raw, gangly freshman with undeniable college potential. “He was about 6-4, all elbows, knees and feet,” Becraft recalled.
