No. 12 Salisbury's 7-4 upset of No. 8 Washington and Lee in the second round of the NCAA tournament last Saturday was immensely gratifying to the reigning national champion for two reasons. The Sea Gulls earned their 15th consecutive appearance in the quarterfinals since the tournament added a round prior to the quarterfinals for the 1998 tournament, and they made amends after dropping a 7-6 double-overtime decision to the Generals on Feb. 20. “It was nice to win the game because it obviously gets us to the quarterfinals,” coach Jim Berkman said Monday morning.

For the second time this season, Stony Brook forced a Maryland women's lacrosse offense that loves to run and gun into a more deliberate attack. The strategy slowed the Terps , but it wasn't enough to beat them. After giving up an early goal and struggling to find the openings in the Seawolves' zone defense, the No. 1 Terps scored six straight times to spark an 11-3 victory in the second round of the NCAA tournament Sunday at Maryland's Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. The Terps (20-0)

The Stevenson men's lacrosse team did not enjoy its first lead of Saturday night's NCAA tournament second-round contest against Washington College until 54 minutes had elapsed. But that was all the Mustangs would need. Senior midfielder Nick Rossi's blast from the left point with 5:42 gave Stevenson a 14-13 lead, and two goals from sophomore attackman Mark Pannenton and one from sophomore midfielder Billy Burgoyne gave the No. 4 Mustangs some extra breathing room en route to a 17-13 win against the No. 11 Shoremen before an announced 740 at Mustang Stadium in Owings Mills.

Despite being located in the same state, these two programs have not met since March 21, 2007, when Washington College emerged with a 10-5 decision. The Shoremen (13-4) - ranked 11th in the most recent United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association poll - have split their last three contests, but secured their first postseason win since 2008 with a 10-7 win against Colorado College in the first round this past Wednesday. Eight different players have scored at least 10 goals each - a group led by senior attackman Bennett Cord's 33 goals and 28 assists.

Loyola's attack was clicking far more efficiently than in the regular season. Sophomore goalie Acie Newton was steady throughout and often sensational in the net. And in Friday's Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference lacrosse quarterfinal game, the No. 7 Dons were having the better of the play against No. 3 Gilman in all the other important areas of the field. When it was all added up, the Dons had an impressive 17-13 upset win over the Greyhounds to advance to Tuesday's semifinals at Johnny Unitas Stadium.

Maryvale Prep's Miranda Ibello and Amanda Bochniak combined for eight goals and two assists to lead the No. 9 Lions to a 14-8 triumph over visiting No. 13 Severn in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference quarterfinals. The pair, who had four goals each, did most of their damage when the game tightened up midway through the first half. Early Maryvale goals by Sydney Hesselbein and Emma Tizard (2 goals, 1 assist) were answered by Severn tallies from Regan Levitt, off an Annie Igler assist, and Cami Whiteford (5 goals)

Three Greyhounds scored in double digits, but it wasn't enough as Loyola's season came to an end Tuesday night in a 70-58 loss to East Carolina in the quarterfinals of the CollegeInsider.com tournament. Though the game was tied at halftime and as late as the 10:49 mark in the second half, the Pirates used an 8-0 run to jump ahead. Loyola never got closer than six the rest of the way. Dylon Cormier (Cardinal Gibbons) led the Greyhounds with 12 points and eight rebounds, but he shot just 5-for-20 from the field.

Think seeding is important? It sure is in the National Invitation Tournament, where top-seeded Alabama will get to host second-seeded Maryland on Tuesday night for the right to advance to the semifinals at Madison Square Garden on April 2. The better seed gets the home game in the NIT.   Alabama defeated fourth-seeded Stanford, 66-54, on Saturday to advance. If the Cardinal had won, the Terps would have hosted the quarterfinal game at Comcast Center. Maryland has won four of five games since the regular season ended -- two in the ACC tournament and two in the NIT. Alabama and Maryland last played in Puerto Rico early last season -- a 20-point Alabama win. The Crimson Tide hasn't lost at home since Dec. 30 -- a 53-50 loss to Tulane.
