Strawberries and asparagus were once again the big stars of Week Six at the Baltimore Farmers' Market, and the mild, overcast morning brought out big crowds. "Crops are about two weeks ahead of schedule this year due to the warm winter and early spring" said Maryland's agriculture secretary Buddy Hance. The Maryland Department of Agriculture sent along some useful strawberry tips. -- Select plump, firm, fully red berries. The small berries are often most flavorful. -- Strawberries measurements: 1 quart = 2 pints = 4 cups and is about the same as 1 liter and weighs 1.25 lbs to 1.5 lbs (or 600 to 700 g)

THE PERFUME of the first fresh strawberries of the season washed over me the other night, triggering a flood of memories. Ever since I was a kid, I have associated the start of strawberry season with the first taste of summer freedom. School let out just as the crop came in. So when the kitchen smelled like strawberries, it meant the regimen of the school year had given way to the slower pace of summer vacation. That was sweet air. It also signaled the first employment opportunity of my boyhood summers.

TALLADEGA, Ala. -- With two laps to go in the Winston 500 here yesterday, Harry Gant thought his day's ride was over.Throttle down and 21 seconds ahead of the field, Gant's Skoal Bandit Oldsmobile sputtered once. . . twice. . . then roared back to life.It was a sign for him to duck underneath Skoal teammate Rick Mast, off whom he had drafted for the previous 10 laps to conserve fuel, and hope for a friendly push.Having stretched his final tank of gas to the limit, Gant could only wonder along with the Talladega Superspeedway crowd of 105,000 if he had enough fumes for the final two laps.

Resting safe below the tumultuous surf, nestled among the starfish and pier pilings, dwell sumptuous bivalves just waiting to be harvested.Starting out in infancy no bigger than a pinpoint, "spats," or baby oysters, grow up to become one of the world's most relished species of shellfish. From French Marenne to Blue Point, Chincoteague to Canadian Golden Mantle, oysters by any other name would taste as sweet.Oysters inspire not only the palate but the mind's fancy. Creole legend has it that errant husbands, sidetracked in their wanderings and tardy in returning home for the evening, could placate irate wives with a gift of oysters.
