SAN DIEGO -- It was the closest thing you'll ever see to the scene in "Major League," when the home crowd erupts as the Charlie Sheen character enters to the strains of "Wild Thing."Crowds of 65,000-plus rose in a deafening salute for San Diego closer Trevor Hoffman whenever AC/DC's "Hell's Bells" sounded on Qualcomm Stadium's public address system in the postseason. And the inspiration came from the 1989 Orioles.Padres vice president Charles Steinberg, formerly with the Orioles, said outfielder Steve Finley approached him earlier in the season and asked him to come up with a song for Hoffman.

Poinsettia Bowl: Navy (8-4) vs. Utah (8-4) When: Tonight, 9 Site: Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego TV, Radio: ESPN, 1090 AM Line: Utah by 7 1/2 When Navy has the ball If the Midshipmen want to improve to 7-6-1 in bowl games, the offense led by quarterback Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada and his backfield mates, Reggie Campbell, Zerbin Singleton, Adam Ballard and Eric Kettani, must be perfect. That has been the case all season. The new wrinkle tonight, in the first bowl game of the season, is that play-calling will be done by new offensive coordinator Ivin Jasper and the team, overall, will be led by Ken Niumatalolo.

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego State athletic director Rick Bay plans to file a grievance with the Qualcomm Stadium supervisors over the 11: 35 a.m. (PDT) kickoff for the season opener that attracted only 21,136 fans.According to Bay, the early start cost the Aztecs an estimated 10,000 spectators. Tickets were being offered to Navy personnel in the area for $5.Conflicts with Fox and ESPN baseball schedules did not allow the Padres to leave the Aztecs with a more attractive time."I've never been involved with anything like this," Bay said.
