Baltimore County officials have ordered a Parkville-area roller-skating rink to cancel an Aug. 16 club-themed event after complaints about crowds of teenagers disturbing residents and businesses as they leave the rink at closing time. This week, the county Department of Permits, Approvals and Inspections sent a letter to Skateland Putty Hill on Belair Road saying the business operated in a way that produces "excessive noise, traffic congestion, vandalism" and other activities creating a public nuisance.

Let's just get on with it. Farewell, Indonesia, fourth most populated country of the world with karmic pedicabs. Time to travel to Dhaka, Bangladesh, the most densely populated city in the world (according to Phil Keoghan's Twitter feed, which I absolutely believe). Abbie and Her Boyfriend Ryan, Team Dominate, depart at 9:52 p.m. They take a cab to a travel agency.

Staffers at Rep. Elijah Cummings' Baltimore office arrived Wednesday to find gobs of putty and wiring on the door, raising fears of an explosive attack and drawing emergency crews from around the region. Though the suspicious objects turned out to be harmless, they alarmed many around the Park Avenue office of the Baltimore Democrat and spawned a criminal inquiry by the FBI. Cummings said he and his colleagues have come to expect more threats over the past few years as political discourse has grown more charged.

Replacing loose, missing or cracked glazing compound in windows is a frequent chore for owners of many older homes. The need for this repair often can be cut sharply by using effective procedures when installing new compound, often called putty. For example, some do-it-yourselfers neglect to paint new glazing compound, or don't seal bare wood before applying the compound. Either of these errors can shorten the compound's life.A high-quality replacement putty also is important to long-lasting repairs.

Matt Porterfield's restless and moving "Putty Hill" is about a pocket of working-class Baltimoreans reacting to the overdose death of a 24-year-old man. It finds seductive underlying forms in what outsiders might consider shapeless lives. When skateboarders and BMXers streak up and down and over a course of concrete dips and valleys, and a teenager tags a wall with a spray-paint baroque version of "Rest in peace, Cody," they prove that they have poetry in them. The director doesn't impose his poetry on them.

Just before flying to Europe to show his new film, "Putty Hill," at festivals in Copenhagen and Lisbon, Matt Porterfield acknowledged that he's taken aback whenever fans find his movies about Baltimore's white working class "so sad." Porterfield draws vital energy from his characters. "Their lives are so singular and surprising," he says. When reviewers or audiences point out how unusual Hamilton or Putty Hill are as movie settings, he thinks that speaks to the banality of other movies.

About a year ago, we had to replace our windows. This is the kind of expense that your average homeowner deems unavoidable when, on particularly windy winter days, there is a snow accumulation on the east side of the house. Indoors. We surmised this day would come during the first fall we lived in our new home, 14 years ago. The windows rattled in the wind, and you could feel a distinct breeze. In some cases, we could even see daylight between the frame and the window. "At least we'll never be victims of radon gas," I remarked cheerfully to my husband.
