On the second floor of the Sudbrook Arts Centre in Pikesville, Tim Fox snapped his fingers to live piano music as he watched his three teenage ballet students move elegantly through their growing repertoire of ballet positions. "This is not brain surgery and nobody dies if you screw up a step," the instructor said gently, detecting a slight hesitation at the double and triple combinations he was calling out as the trio warmed up at the barre to Richard Strauss' "Russian Folk Dance.

Races in the Baltimore Running Festival will begin an hour earlier than originally scheduled because of the Orioles' deep run into the baseball postseason. In a letter to participants posted on the running festival's website , organizer Lee Corrigan wrote that start times were made earlier to "ensure all public safety personnel can be deployed in an organized fashion. " The festival, which includes a marathon, half-marathon, group relay, 5k and kids race, will stagger starting times between 7 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. on Oct. 18, the day the Orioles and Kansas City Royals would potentially play Game 7 of the American League Championship Series at Camden Yards.

The first family is America's egalitarian version of royalty (if you are too young to remember the sprawling Kennedy clan), and thanks to our People magazine sensibilities, we know as much about their family life and fashion as the Brits do about Kate and William's. For example, the latest news is that 13-year-old Malia Obama is beginning to spread her social wings, and it is giving President Barack Obama hives to see his oldest daughter leave the White House all dolled up for a dance or a party.

Injured righthander Mark Williamson was in uniform before last night's game and is optimistic that he can beat the projected timetable for his return from arthroscopic elbow surgery.Williamson had several bone chips removed from his right elbow seven days ago in Birmingham, Ala. He will not pick up a baseball for at least three weeks, and his doctors predicted it would be about 10 weeks before he will be back in playing shape. But Williamson said yesterday he hopes to be back in the Orioles bullpen by the All-Star break.

May has always been a tough month for me because of what I seem to do so often, which is kill flowers.Begonias, mums, impatiens, geraniums -- doesn't matter. If I touch 'em, they die. It's that simple.Pansies, zinnias, marigolds, poppies . . . you see me fooling with them in the dirt, you might as well call a priest.Roses . . . don't even talk to me about roses.I've killed so many roses, there should be permanent black bunting around my rose beds.Indoor flowers, outdoor flowers, annuals, perennials -- it's all the same to me. If I plant it, it's a goner.

From Jay Hancock's Blog: A cold weather forecast has pulled natural gas prices up from an eight-year low, Bloomberg reports. That will probably be reflected in BGE's residential natural gas price for January. But while prices may have notched up, they're rising from really low levels. The recession and a worldwide natural-gas glut have depressed gas prices and profits. The default natural gas price for BGE customers this month (the floating price you get if you don't lock in with another supplier)

There's a guy at my gym who's always doing one-leg push-ups. I've seen people do push-ups on one arm before, but can you explain how to do a single-leg push-up? My arms and legs are strong, and I think it would add a challenge to my routine. Performing a push-up with the support of just one leg can be difficult, but when done correctly it's a great way to kick your push-up routine into a higher gear. To do a one-leg or "leg-lift" push-up, begin in the traditional push-up position. Your feet should be hip-width apart, with your arms straight and your abdominal muscles tight so your body is flat like a board.

It would be great to have a permanent site for Western Maryland College's first on-campus, televised aerobics program, says program originator and co-instructor Ranee Deyo. And co-instructor Sally Hall would really like a weight-training room where she could continue her current program of working out with weights, Ms. Deyo says.Western Maryland students will gain an aerobics room and a weight-training center outside the regular campus athletic facilities if college officials can raise about $67,000 in cash and donated equipment to meet a challenge pledge.

I've been doing push-ups for years. Is there any way to kick them up a notch so I don't have to do so many to feel the burn? Short of having someone sit on your back during push-ups, there are a handful of modifications. One way to amp up your routine is to use only one arm. However, this also puts more stress on the joints - so stop if you experience elbow, wrist, knee or ankle pain. Another challenging option is the rotated push-up. As you're straightening your arms in the standard push-up, rotate your right side down so that you're balancing on the outer edge of your right foot and the inner edge of your left foot.

WASHINGTON - Soaring energy prices punished ordinary Americans in May, triggering the highest run-up in inflation in six months and exceeding the expectations of economic forecasters, the government reported yesterday. Consumer prices rose 0.6 percent, as measured by the Labor Department's Consumer-Price Index. Prices have risen by 4.2 percent, slightly above the 4.1 percent rise in prices for last year. Those annual numbers reflect the rise in all prices across the economy, and don't necessarily capture the pain that many Americans are feeling at the cash register.

Add milk to the list of products that consumers are paying more for this summer as analysts predict that prices will reach record highs during the next few months - fallout from the rising price of oil. The rising prices are pressuring profits at several companies that sell dairy products, including pizza, yogurt and ice cream makers. Domino's Pizza Inc., for example, said it could be forced to raise its prices due in part to higher cheese costs. Nationally, the average cost of a gallon of whole milk rose 19 cents during the past two months, to $3.26 in May, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

CHICAGO -- Corn continued its sharp rise in price yesterday, driven upward by demand for ethanol and an increasingly prosperous world eager for food. The benchmark price of corn reached an exchange-imposed limit of $3.965 a bushel shortly after trading began at the Chicago Board of Trade. To maintain financial stability, the board limits daily increases and decreases in corn to 20 cents per bushel. Limits are rarely needed, the exchange said, and come into play only when prices are highly volatile.

Coach Mike Shramek said the defining moment came in early December, when two of his Calvert Hall ice hockey players were instructed to do pushups for disciplinary reasons. "At first, the other players waited and watched, so when the amount of pushups these players were responsible for were done, practice would continue," said Shramek, in his fifth season. "Then, without saying a word to each other, the other players, one by one, began to drop to the ice and join the others doing pushups.
