Lucille Gorham remembers a quiet, "nerdy" scientist who became a regular presence in her East Baltimore neighborhood, walking down dangerous streets and alleys as if he didn't know better. "He was very easy to talk to, didn't mind being in the neighborhood," said Gorham, former president of the Middle East Community Organization. "He talked like I talk, didn't talk with a lot of professional language I didn't understand." Ursuline Purnell strode into the polling place at Baltimore's Gwynns Falls Elementary School, a Barack Obama T-shirt tucked beneath her overcoat and an Obama pin placed proudly on her lapel. Some spoke of the historic opportunity to elect an African-American to the presidency. Others shared their hope of making a difference in a fiercely contested Democratic nominating contest.

MIAMI -- No one at this year's Super Bowl knows how much special teams can affect a game more than Russ Purnell. As the Ravens' special teams coach for the January 2001 Super Bowl, Purnell watched the New York Giants' Ron Dixon return a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown to cut the Ravens' lead to 17-7 and provide hope of a comeback. But the emotions swung right back to the Ravens on the ensuing kickoff when Jermaine Lewis answered with an 84-yard touchdown, racing down the right sideline with a finger raised.
