A puppy in Brooklyn Park shocked its owner by dragging home a human foot, Anne Arundel County police said today.Police said they were called to the home of Margie Lee on Saturday morning, after receiving a report that her puppy, Kelly, was gnawing on a right human foot. The foot, embalmed and partially decomposed, apparently came from the near by Mount Calvary Cemetery, police said, where it was unearthed by a bulldozer and severed from a body during a recent grave-digging."They hit a grave that wasn't marked," said Anne Arundel County police spokesman Richard Molloy, "and didn't know they had hit it until the dog came up with the foot."

Only one animal has chosen to be our ally and our friend. When that dog decides to bond to us, that's eternal. It's never going to change. ... Human beings have failed dogs constantly. I've never heard of a dog failing a human being." - ROBERT LIVAS, Will County, Ill., circuit judge, as he sentenced a man to 15 months in prison for killing a puppy

Judging from my mail, there's always a lot of confusion over pet "papers" -- what they are, what they're for and what they're worth."Papers," generally consist of two forms -- a pedigree and a registration form. The first is a record of the animal's family tree, showing the names of his ancestors, as well as the titles they held; show champions, for example, are often written in a different color to make them stand out.As fancy as a pedigree is -- and some of them can get pretty ornate -- it's the second piece of paper, a nondescript little form, that's more important: It allows you to register your pet with an organization such as the American Kennel Club.

President Barack Obama fulfilled a campaign promise to his daughters with their new puppy, but the decision to forgo a shelter dog is sure to leave some animal activists growling. Bo, a 6-month-old Portuguese water dog, will make his public debut at the White House on Tuesday after months of intense speculation about his arrival. The first pooch is a gift from Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, a Massachusetts Democrat who owns three Porties and wanted the Obamas to follow suit. The housebroken puppy, which has been undergoing extensive training in recent weeks, was named Charlie by his original owners, but first daughters Malia and Sasha rechristened him Bo in honor of their cousin's cat of the same name.

Challenges to conventional thinking are rarely met with open arms, and the concept of early spay-neuter, despite its huge potential as a weapon against animal overpopulation, has been no different in this regard.Spay a kitten at 8 weeks? Neuter a puppy at 10 weeks? The concept of such surgery on animal babies is shocking to many -- an ironic position in a society that accepts the relatively benign procedures of removing dewclaws and docking tails on infant puppies and the painful practice of ear cropping on slightly older ones.

So you want to get a puppy. Great! Now where should you go and what should you do? I would imagine that the owners of the new store in Columbia called "Charm City Puppies" would want you to immediately walk through their doors. Or the folks who manage "Today's Pet" would want you in their store. But are there other, better options? If you were to ask me the question of where you should get your puppy, my answer would be to head to Columbia's animal shelter — the Howard County Animal Control and Adoption Facility (HCAC)

Not too long ago there was an advertising campaign meant to stress the importance of preventive car care."You can pay me now," intoned a grim-faced mechanic, "or you can pay me later." The message was clear -- regular oil changes are cheaper and easier than replacing an engine. The same principle applies when it comes to raising a dog: The time and money you put in early will save you grief and additional expense later. It's a message too few people heed. One person I know went through an experience that was difficult, but not the least bit uncommon.
