Del. Shirley Nathan-Pulliam, a veteran lawmaker from Baltimore County, has filed papers to run for the Senate in the 2014 Democratic primary in the district now represented by Sen. Verna Jones-Rodwell of Baltimore City. Nathan-Pulliam, a member of the House since 1995, is seeking to take advantage of a redrawn district that is split between the county and Baltimore city. In the new 44th District, formerly all in the city, about two-thirds of the residents are county residents. "The numbers at this time are on my side," Nathan-Pulliam said.

The Archbishop Curley boys soccer team passed an early season test at River Hill on Tuesday, but the young Hawks didn't make things easy. More efficient with slightly fewer scoring chances, the No. 3 Friars scored goals in each half while senior goalkeeper Jake Ossie shined at the other end with 10 saves for a 2-0 win over No. 7 River Hill. Freshman Tre Pulliam scored in the 22nd minute and junior Eric Spalt provided an insurance goal five minutes into the second half. Junior Dino Gizzi assisted on both of the goals.

Robert Michael Pulliam, a retired Westinghouse Electric Corp. manager and former Columbia resident, died of cancer Tuesday at his home in Surfside Beach, S.C. He was 57. Born in Baltimore, Mr. Pulliam was raised in Catonsville, where he graduated from high school in 1963. He enlisted in the Army and served in Korea as a radio repairman. He held an associate's degree in business from Catonsville Community College and also studied at what is now Towson University. Mr. Pulliam went to work at Westinghouse Electric's Linthicum plant in 1966.

Martha Ott Pulliam, 100, grandmother of Vice President Dan Quayle and a former newspaper publisher, died Thursday in Franklin, Ind. Mr. Quayle, who in his 1988 debate with Democratic vice-presidential candidate Lloyd Bentsen said his grandmother helped shape his political philosophy, called her "the matriarch of our family." Mrs. Pulliam was a librarian in Franklin. In 1919, she married Eugene C. Pulliam, founder of Central Newspapers Inc. and publisher of newspapers in Indianapolis, Muncie and Vincennes and in Phoenix.

The city of Frederick's new chief operations officer was killed along with his three sons yesterday morning when a car rear-ended the family's sedan as they drove to get haircuts. Killed were Rodney B. Pulliam, 38, and sons Matthew, 8, Jordan, 9, and Rodney Jr., 10, all of Frederick. Mayor Jennifer P. Dougherty, who appointed Pulliam to his new post, called the death of the family man and public servant "an unspeakable loss." "Rodney was a prayerful and pleasant man," she said in a statement.

Eugene S. Pulliam, 84, publisher of the Indianapolis Star and Indianapolis News and a staunch defender of press freedom during a 64-year career, died Wednesday night in Indianapolis. He became publisher after his father, Eugene C. Pulliam, died in 1975. The Star won the Pulitzer Prize that year for an investigation of police corruption and in 1991 for a series on medical malpractice. In the early 1950s, Mr. Pulliam assailed the smear tactics of Sen. Joseph McCarthy and throughout his career defended the free speech protections of the First Amendment.

A 35-year-old man faces life plus nearly 50 years in prison after being convicted of attempted murder for forcing the owner of a Northeast Baltimore hair salon to kneel on a bathroom floor and shooting her at least twice in the head during a robbery. Malcolm Anthony Pulliam is scheduled to be sentenced April 5. A jury found him guilty of five charges — including gun violations — related to the May 4, 2010, shooting inside the Blessed Productions Hair Salon in the 6600 block of Belair Road.

Omar V. Pulliam II, a retired Dulaney High School foreign language teacher and election judge who was active in area community theater productions, died Sunday of multiple organ failure at St. Joseph Medical Center. The longtime Ruxton resident was 76. Omar Vernice Pulliam II was born in Asheboro, N.C., and moved with his family in 1942 to Victory Villa in Essex. He graduated from Kenwood High School in 1951 and served in the Army from 1954 to 1956. Mr. Pulliam earned a bachelor's degree from the Johns Hopkins University and a master's degree from George Washington University.

Father Sylvester Peterka, dressed casually in a T-shirt and shorts, leads me into the darkened interior of the Immaculate Conception Church on Druid Hill Avenue and over to an alcove dedicated to the Virgin Mary.A statue of Mary towers above us, her arms spread in benediction, a smile on her lips. She is flanked by a double rack of vigil candles, their flames flickering gently. And over on one wall rests Agnes Pulliam's painting.We stand before it, the priest and I, and study the painting in silence.
