Richard E. Hook III, a retired sales executive and real estate broker, died Sunday of heart failure at his summer residence in Sherwood Forest. He was 95. Richard Edwin Hook III was born in Baltimore and raised on North Calvert Street. He was a 1936 graduate of City College and earned a bachelor's degree in 1940 from the Johns Hopkins University. He enlisted in the Army in 1941 and later went to officer candidate school, where he was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1943. Mr. Hook, who rose to captain, commanded a company of the 447th Battalion in New York and later in Seattle.

The Baltimore Sun Co. said yesterday that it has promoted Hilary A. Schneider to vice president of sales and marketing, and Howard G. Weinstein to vice president of employee relations and administration.Schneider, 36, will continue to head advertising and new business development, but she adds responsibility for circulation and marketing.Weinstein, 40, was promoted to recognize his increased oversight responsibilities in several initiatives, including renovation of the newspaper's Calvert Street offices, and "Reading by 9," an effort by The Sun to help third-graders in the Baltimore metropolitan area learn to read and improve their reading skills.

Waldrup named vice president at SSSI Corp. Cheryl Walker Waldrup of Waterford, Va., has been appointed vice president of sales at Columbia-based Scientific Systems and Software International (SSSI) Corp., a provider of custom software and Web services. Formerly vice president of business development for iLearning Inc. in Baltimore, a project of Sylvan Ventures, Waldrup has more than 20 years in sales and marketing management, product launch and channel development. The appointment was announced by SSSI's president and chief executive officer, A. Nayab Siddiqui.
