Linebacker Jesse Becton, who spent most of the season on the Baltimore CFLs' practice roster, has agreed to a one-year contract with an option year to join the Las Vegas Posse. Becton said he will be activated for Thursday's game against the Edmonton Eskimos.Becton started two games at outside linebacker for the CFLs this season, but as a member of the practice roster is free to move to another team. He said he called Posse secondary coach Jeff Reinebold, his coach at the University of New Mexico, to explore the possibility recently.

The Baltimore Stallions released rookie offensive lineman John James yesterday after he refused to sign a practice roster contract.James, 6 feet 3, 300 pounds, began the season on the practice squad before injuries helped create an opening for him on the active roster. He went on to start seven games at either guard position, but had not played since spraining his right ankle against Birmingham on Sept. 9. James had begun to practice lightly last week."I don't know what goes through players' minds sometimes," Baltimore assistant general manager Jim Popp said.

Rookie cornerback John Williams was considered a long shot to make the team when he reported to training camp as a free agent out of Southern University.The Ravens thought enough of his quickness and hustle to sign Williams, 5 feet 7, 180 pounds, to the practice roster. But, with injuries suddenly tearing through the Ravens' secondary, Williams now finds himself on the active roster for the first time."I'm excited, and it's still a surprise," said Williams, who was signed to the active roster yesterday.

Some went fishing. Others used the time to go back home. Coach Don Matthews even found time to play golf.After having six days off from practice for their bye week, the Stallions had a light workout yesterday and now face a crucial period. It's three weeks before the playoffs begin and six days until the Stallions (13-3) play host to British Columbia (9-7), which beat the Stallions in the opening week."This was planned long ago," said Matthews, who never had given his team more than five days off in previous years.

After spending nearly two seasons together, the Baltimore Stallions and defensive tackle Robert Presbury have parted ways.Presbury was released yesterday, after he refused to accept his reassignment to the Baltimore practice roster.Rookie Demetrious Maxie, who filled in capably for Presbury last month when he missed two games with a pulled hamstring, will start in his place Saturday in the CFL game against visiting Shreveport."We're trying to get more plays out of our defensive tackle," Baltimore coach Don Matthews said.
