The smile on John Carroll coach Keith Watson's face was apparent. He had plenty of reason for wearing it, too. Watson's third-ranked Patriots used a dominant effort in the middle weights and five pins to defeat host Archbishop Spalding in the finals and win the Spalding Cavalier Duals. The Patriots went 5-0 in the tournament to take the crown. South River finished third in the tournament, defeating Loudon County High School from Northern Virginia, 52-9, in the third-place match.

For a big man, Vince Wilfork moves around a lot. On one snap, he can be at left defensive end or tackle. On another snap, he can be at the same position on the right side. Sometimes, Wilfork can line up directly over the center. But he's always in somebody's head - one big, mean, nasty 6-foot-2, 325-pound headache. "Vince Wilfork is a beast," said Ravens running back Ray Rice about the New England Patriots' top defensive lineman. "He is a flat-out beast. He handles double-teams.

An even-tempered wrestler, McDonogh's Jack Clark has twice won the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association and private schools state tournaments, as well as a National Preps crown after having been a runner-up the past two years. But during the host Eagles' McDonogh Holiday Duals on Friday, the 145-pound junior showed how dominant he can be against the best Maryland has to offer when he's a little fired up. Clark began the day with a pin over John Carroll's Artie Milner before scoring a 21-5 technical fall over Wilde Lake's Malik Jackson.

Yesterday I sent out this tweet: "Just waved through a singular 'they.' Pound sand, sticklers. " The singular they was in a sentence on The Sun 's editorial page: " Although experts say only a tiny proportion of seriously mentally ill people ever resort to acts of violence, the odds of someone doing so are greatly increased if they aren't in treatment or refuse to stay in it. " There followed a good deal of...

Asking John Carroll senior George Weber about his possible matchup Friday with McDonogh junior Jack Clark, the 2012 National Prep champion at 145 pounds, is a "sensitive" subject, Patriots coach Keith Watson said. Weber has lost to Clark in every match between the two wrestlers, including two state championship bouts and once already this season. But the matches have mostly been close, some of them painfully so. What separates the Maryland State Wrestling Association's No. 1 and No. 2 wrestlers in the 145-pound weight class is not easily discerned by the coaches who have seen them both numerous times.

John Auslander, a backup Terps forward, suffered a left tibia fracture in a recent practice and will be out for the season, coach Mark Turgeon said today. He is to undergo surgery soon. The 6-7, 220-pound Auslander sometimes spelled center Alex Len. The junior played more last season, particularly before Len became eligible 10 games into the year. Auslander is Len's roommate and helped serve as the center's spokesman with the media as Len learned English. Auslander is a former walk-on who earned a scholarship.

A year ago, Devin Butler sat in a purple seat at M&T Bank Stadium and watched Frederick Douglass of Prince George's County fall to Middletown in the Class 2A football state championship. On Saturday, the freshman quarterback was on the field with the same stakes, battling the Knights in an attempt to land the first state title for Douglass. On the state's largest stage, Butler alternated flashes of brilliance with reminders of his youth in a 30-12 loss to Middletown. Douglass fell behind Middletown, 16-0, and couldn't recover as the Knights beat the Eagles in the title game for the second straight season, closing out their first perfect campaign with their 22nd straight victory.
