When the United States Under-19 women's lacrosse team steps on the field Thursday for its opening game at the Federation of International Lacrosse world championships in Hanover, Germany, expectations will be high - and with good reason. The United States has won the last three Under-19 titles, hasn't lost a game during that stretch, and won the 1999, 2003 and 2007 championships by an average of 11.7 goals - all over Australia. The Aussies won the inaugural U-19 title, 5-4, in Haverford, Pa., in 1995, but that is the only game the U.S. has lost in the event's history.

Alyssa Blevins spent much of the C. Milton Wright lacrosse season on the sideline recovering from December ankle surgery. Now, she's spending her summer making up for lost time. One of the area's best defenders, Blevins hardly will have time to put her stick down until after she helps the United States try to defend its title at the Federation of International Lacrosse Under-19 Women's World Championships in August in Germany. In the meantime, she will play at the Under Armour All-America Classic Saturday at Towson's Johnny Unitas Stadium and at the Champion All-America Showcase July 17-19 in Orlando, Fla. "Getting back on the field was the best thing that I've ever felt," Blevins said.

If nothing else, last night's game against top-ranked Loyola was a chance for the Towson women's lacrosse team to see how far it had come. The Tigers entered the contest with a 3-1 record, their best start since 1998 and a refreshing change for a program that finished 7-9 just a year ago. But the undefeated Greyhounds would provide the team's first real test, and the way the Tigers handled it would likely set the tone for the rest of the spring....

When Bryn Mawr's girls lacrosse team was unranked in the preseason poll, the Mawrtians did not get upset."We decided instead that we would use it to our advantage," said junior defender Sara Jordan. "People wouldn't know we were that good and we could take them a little by surprise. All we could do was go up."And the Mawrtians have. They broke into the poll this week at No. 13. After beating No. 10 John Carroll, 9-6, in an Association of Independent Schools East Division showdown yesterday at John Carroll, the Mawrtians might be headed still higher.

The last three times Loyola's women's lacrosse team has played Penn State, the results could not have been closer. Loyola won each game, including two in overtime, by a single goal.Yesterday's meeting was a one-goal game too -- for exactly eight minutes. At that point, Allison Valentino's free-position goal into an open net gave the No. 3 Greyhounds a two-goal lead and they sprinted to a 16-8 victory in their season opener at Curley Field.Penn State, 1-1 and ranked No. 5 in the Lacrosse Magazine preseason coaches' poll, fell behind 6-1 midway through the half.

St. Mary's junior Mo McDonough tied the school record for career goals yesterday, but it mattered little to her. Also of little importance to the Saints is the school assist mark, which senior Randall Goldsborough came within one of tying in St. Mary's 4-1 victory over two-time defending Baltimore Catholic League champion John Carroll. What matters most to the Saints (9-1-1 overall, 8-1-1 league) is that they beat a John Carroll squad that has been a thorn in their sides in recent years.St.
