Junior forward Corey Pop- ham scored a goal and had an assist as unranked Gilman upset No. 1 Calvert Hall, 3-2, in a Maryland Scholastic Association Armstrong A Conference Division I boys soccer game yesterday at Gilman.It was the first loss in 45 MSA A Conference games for the Cardinals (10-1-1), dating to 1989. Calvert Hall, which has won three consecutive MSA A Conference titles and seven of the past eight, defeated Gilman, 6-0, earlier this season."We just don't like playing on a wet field it seems," said Calvert Hall coach Bill Karpo- vich.

The Severn School kicked off a minority recruitment drive this week, introducing a new scholarship and pledging to work to diversify the student body at the exclusive prep school.Fifteen black leaders from throughout the county were invited to a Tuesday morning meeting to learn more about the 76-year-old institution, which as late as 1967 admitted white males only. While at the school, they got to meet seventh-grader Monique Jennings, the first recipient of the new Leroy Sparks Minority Scholarship.
