PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Crying and shaking with emotion, the woman who said she was raped at the Kennedy compound here told a police officer about nine hours after the incident that William Kennedy Smith grabbed her by the ankle near the pool on the estate, "where after some struggling he sexually assaulted her," according to a copy of an official police report obtained by Newsday.The report, taken about 1:20 p.m. March 30, described the woman, 29, as distraught and hysterical at points during the interview with police and said details of her story were difficult to extract.

Crime in Baltimore County dropped by about 5 percent last year compared with 2004, but the number of homicides and robberies was up, according to the county Police Department. The number of crimes reported last year was the lowest since 1983, according to police, who also said that violent crime fell more than 8 percent last year compared with the year before. In 2005, 68,851 crimes were reported in Baltimore County; 72,648 were reported in 2004. However, the number of homicides last year in the county, 40, was the most since 1992.

A three-vehicle accident Thursday afternoon caused two Maryland drivers to be sent to area hospitals. According to Anne Arundel County police, officers responded around 4:09 p.m. to a report of an accident on Route 100 eastbound and Magothy Bridge Road in Pasadena. Officers found three vehicles in the intersection with heavy damage: a silver 2011 Chrysler 300, a blue 2004 Toyota Highlander and a brown UPS 2001 Freightliner Diesel delivery truck. Their report stated that the Highlander was heading east on Route 100, approaching Magothy Bridge Road, when the driver of the Chrysler, traveling on Magothy Bridge Road, turned left against a red light.

LOS ANGELES - The judge in the Los Angeles Police Department's Rampart Division trial indicated Wednesday that three officers convicted of framing gang members may have grounds for a new trial because a computer mistake on a key piece of evidence could have misled jurors. "I am troubled. ... This is not a small issue," Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Jacqueline A. Connor said, describing a police report that mistakenly exaggerated the injuries the police officers claimed they suffered.

A 39-year-old Northwest Baltimore man was struck fatally yesterday as he ran across the street in front of his house, city police said.John Warren Evans ran into the left front fender of a southbound 1997 Ford Explorer as he attempted to get across the 3400 block of Park Heights Ave. shortly after 5 p.m., according to police.The victim was taken by ambulance to Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after the accident.Police said pedestrian error appeared to be the cause of the accident, and that no charges had been filed against the driver of the Explorer.

An Anne Arundel County emergency medical technician accused of punching a 12-year-old girl in the face threatened to hit her before he went into her house and cursed at her after the incident, according to statements released Friday by county police.Michael L. Swain Sr., 44, of the 2300 block of Sandy Mount Road in Finksburg was charged with assault. He was released on his own recognizance Wednesday and suspended without pay, (P officials said.A Fire Department spokesman said he expects an internal investigation into the six-year veteran's actions to be completed early this week.

Two men are being treated at Johns Hopkins Hospital after they were shot in East Baltimore early Saturday, according to city police. Officers responded to a call about 1:25 a.m. to East Preston and North Aisquith Avenue, but Det. Donny Moses, a police spokesman, said the victims were not there. A few minutes later, police were notified that two men with gunshot wounds walked into the Hopkins emergency room. Moses said that each man, ages 28 and 35, had been shot several times in the legs.

State legislators are threatening to withhold $30,000 in federal and state crime prevention grants for fiscal 2000 if a Taneytown police report on serious crimes fails to reach the House Appropriations Committee by July.Carroll is one of four Maryland counties facing loss of the U.S. Justice Department and state grants, which are administered by the Governor's Office of Crime Control and Prevention, according to a report from the Subcommittee on Public Safety and Administration to the House Committee on Appropriations.

The biggest crime problem in Annapolis is theft - mostly stolen CD players and pocket change - according to the city police department's annual report. In all, crime statistics in the state capital showed little change in 2001 compared with the year before, other than an increase in burglaries. More than half of the 2,419 crimes reported last year are categorized as major by FBI guidelines were thefts, according to the report. "Most of them are thefts from autos," said Lt. Gregory Imhof of the Annapolis police.

Police in Georgia say they are investigating whether the suspect in a deadly shooting at an Atlanta-area megachurch is the same man convicted of chasing down a man and shooting him outside a Northwest Baltimore mosque in 2001. Floyd Lester Palmer, 51, is listed with the same name and birth date in court records from both incidents, which bear striking parallels. Palmer pleaded guilty to second-degree assault in the Maryland shooting - at a mosque where he was a security guard - and was later found not criminally responsible.
