An Anne Arundel County police officer was injured when his cruiser overturned on Route 100 in Pasadena amid intermittent rain showers Wednesday night, according to a county Fire Department spokesman. Emergency personnel responded to the westbound side of the highway near Catherine Avenue at 8:56 p.m. for an overturned police cruiser, said Lt. Keith Hamilton, the spokesman. The officer who was driving the cruiser was transported to Baltimore Washington Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, Hamilton said.

A Baltimore police sergeant who claimed he was never treated for post-traumatic stress disorder after he fatally shot a man in 2005 has settled a lawsuit against the city, in a deal that allows him to retire with his pension, according to court documents and his attorney. Under terms of the settlement, Richard A. Willard, 45, dropped the federal suit and a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission; the Police Department canceled an administrative hearing that could have led to his termination.

Three men were arrested and two handguns were recovered after a man shot at a Southwest District police officer following a traffic stop Monday night, police said. Maj. Anthony Brown said two men bailed out of the vehicle after officers pulled it over in the 2500 block of W. Baltimore St. before 8 p.m., and one of them fired a shot at an officer that missed. The shooter dropped the handgun and fled, but the second man was caught a short distance away, Brown said. Two other men remained in the vehicle and were arrested after officers saw a second handgun on the floor of the car. Additional details were not available at the scene.

A man shot in the knee by an off-duty Baltimore police officer during an apparent break-in of the officer's vehicle was continuing to recuperate Sunday in the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, city police said. The name of the man was not released, but he is in his 30s and is expected to be charged with auto theft and related crimes, according to police. Police have not identified the officer, but said he is a 10-year veteran of the department. He was placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of an internal investigation.

An Anne Arundel County Police officer was flown to Shock Trauma after being struck in a multi-vehicle accident on Aris T. Allen Boulevard Sunday night. Cpl. Kevin Mont pulled over a vehicle about 9:17 p.m. near Riva Road, Annapolis, stopping in the left lane with his emergency lights flashing, police said. He got out to ask the driver to pull over to the right shoulder, and as he was walking back to his vehicle, a white Toyota Celica that had stopped behind the police vehicle was struck by a fast-moving Acura RL, witnesses told police.

A 40-year-old former Baltimore police detective assigned to a federal drug task force was sentenced to 20 months in federal prison Thursday for lying to colleagues, embezzling confidential-informant funds and pocketing jewelry from suspects, according to the Maryland U.S. Attorney's Office. In April, Mark. J. Lunsford admitted to splitting $10,000 in law enforcement funds with a supposed source, whose work he regularly lied about to fraudulently obtain cash payments and to swiping an $18,000 diamond watch while raiding an alleged drug house and filing false investigative reports.

A Baltimore police officer died and four firefighters were taken to a local hospital Wednesday after the officer's car rear-ended a parked fire engine on U.S. 40, officials said. Officer Tommy Portz, a 10-year veteran and married father of three, was pronounced dead while being taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, officials said. The 32-year-old is the third active city officer killed in less than a month. Fire Chief James Clack said that Engine 8 was dispatched to a report of an injured person in the median area of Calhoun and Franklin streets but could not locate a patient.

Astride the Harley-Davidson motorcycle, the Baltimore County police officer cut a striking figure. The officer was a rookie, on the short side - and an African-American woman. Twenty years ago, Gwendolyn Parrish became the first black woman on the Baltimore County police force on motorcycle patrol. The image of her wearing "black leather motorcycle boots up to her knees" is still the way Baltimore County police chief James Johnson remembers Parrish, who died last Saturday at 56 from complications following surgery.

A Baltimore City police officer was struck by a pick-up truck while riding on a department motorcycle Wednesday afternoon, police said. The crash occurred just before 5 p.m. at the intersection of Lombard and Howard streets. The officer taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center for non-life threatening injuries. A Baltimore City police officer shot and killed a man in the 500 block of North Madeira St. Friday night after a gunfight erupted in the alleys of East Baltimore, police said. An officer from the Eastern District Special Enforcement Section approached the man around 7:30 p.m. The suspect, who police did not identify, engaged the officer in a physical struggle before running down an alley and firing multiple times, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. The officer fired back, killing the suspect.
