St. John's Church to hold organ recital by Richard Parrigan St. John's Catholic Church in Westminster will hold an organ recital featuring Richard Parrigan from San Antonio at 5:30 p.m. today in the new sanctuary at 43 Monroe St. Parrigan, retired chairman of the music and humanities department at San Antonio College, will play the church's rebuilt three manual Moler organ. He was also the dean of the San Antonio chapter of the American Guild of Organists. He has bachelor's and master's degrees in music from Midwestern University.

Exhibit showcases life on the Chesapeake Bay The oil and watercolor paintings of Westminster artist H. Mc Cullin will be featured at Carroll Life Gallery in the County Office Building today through Nov. 17. "Journeys" focuses on Mc Cullin's exploration of bay country, subjects that include life on the Chesapeake Bay, marshes and with watermen. His style, termed "nostalgic realism," blends traditional watercolor technique with extensive use of transparent washes. He recently showed his work in Wisconsin, Connecticut and Colorado.

Floral show will benefit human services programs A "Holiday Delights Floral Design Show" will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Carroll County Career and Technology Center in Westminster and will benefit Human Services Programs of Carroll County. The show is sponsored by the Soroptimist International of Carroll County to raise money for Human Services Programs' "Neighbors in Need" holiday shop. Clark Taggart, designer/manager of Williamsburg Inn Floral Studio, and 10 floral designers from Stewart N. Dutterer Flower Shop of Westminster will show holiday trends in floral design.

Carroll County's fertile fields had, until this year, not produce a thriving poetry group.But the writers who came together in April to form Poetry Forum are now hoping to scatter the seeds of verse everywhere they can, such as with the student poetry contest they are now sponsoring, and a lending library on writing and poetry."

"I've always enjoyed writing about love," says Allison Fisher.This young woman's poems of love and fantasy were chosen by members of the Poetry Forum for a Valentine's reading to be held at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Carroll County Arts Council, 15 E. Main St., Westminster.Allison, 17, a student at North Carroll High School, entered a poetry contest last fall that was conducted by the Poetry Forum. She is is one of five poets who were invited to read their work. The other high school poets invited to the reading are Nicole Welsh of Francis Scott Key High, Jill Robin Sisson of Westminster High, Carolyn Scovich of South Carroll High and Susan Lantz of Liberty High.

Community music group to perform spring concert The Encore Community Music Association will present its spring concert at 3 p.m. Sunday in the auditorium of North Carroll High School. The program will include band, string orchestra and chamber ensemble performances. Music from classics to pops will be performed by an intergenerational group that includes performers ages 8 to 80. The concert is free. A reception with refreshments will be held after the concert. The school is at 1400 Panther Drive, Hampstead.

Five Carroll County high school students have written winning love poetry for a contest sponsored by the Carroll County Poetry Forum.The winners take the stage tomorrow night at the forum's "Poems for St. Valentine's: A Poetry Reading."A winning entry was chosen from each of the high schools. The subject of the contest was in keeping with the spirit of Valentine's Day -- love. Not all of the compositions started out with that theme in mind, however.Nicole Welsh, a 15 year-old sophomore at Francis Scott Key High School, says her untitled entry did not start out as a love poem.
