A bullet hole in a window marks the spot where two men robbed and then shot a pizza delivery man in Columbia's Owen Brown village early Friday morning as he left to make a delivery, police said.Ejaz Amed, 40, of Laurel was leaving Pizz-A-Boli's in the 7100 block of Oakland Mills Road at 1 a.m. when two men wearing masks robbed him in the parking lot, said Sgt. Tara Ball, a spokeswoman for the Howard County Police Department.She said Amed was carrying less than $50 as he went to make to his last delivery of the day -- sandwiches ordered by someone in the 8400 block of Dorsey Run Road.

A man brandishing a tool made to look like a shotgun was shot and killed by Anne Arundel County police Saturday night after he robbed a Pizza Hut in Brooklyn Park. Gary James Beemer, 24, was shot about midnight outside the Pizza Hut in the 5000 block of Ritchie Highway, said Officer Carol Frye, a police spokeswoman. Beemer, who lived in the 100 block of E. 11th Ave., about a block from the pizza shop at 10th Avenue and Ritchie, was pronounced dead at Harbor Hospital Center in southern Baltimore, Frye said.

The younger of two brothers convicted in the slaying of a Falls Road pizza shop owner was sentenced to life without parole yesterday by a Baltimore County judge convinced of the man's guilt and angered by his lack of remorse. Michael J. Hoffman, 36, told Peter Makris' family in Baltimore County Circuit Court yesterday that he didn't kill Makris last summer and that he was stunned when a jury convicted him. "I'm sorry for your loss, but I'm an innocent man," Hoffman said as he turned toward Makris' relatives, who sat crying in a hushed courtroom.

A 20-year-old woman pleaded guilty yesterday to being an accessory after the fact in the killing of a Falls Road pizza shop owner in July. Jennifer Hoffman admitted in Baltimore County Circuit Court that she waited outside Pepe's Pizza while her husband robbed the shop and killed 72-year-old Peter Makris. She could be sentenced to up to five years for her role in the crimes. Judge Robert N. Dugan agreed to postpone sentencing yesterday until Hoffman testifies against her brother-in-law, Martin Hoffman.

A pizza deliveryman who was beaten and robbed of $40 Tuesday evening by three youths with baseball bats was in serious but stable condition yesterday at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, police said.Robert Lee Ghan, 22, of the 7000 block of Baker St. at Fort Meade, suffered a facial fracture, police said. He told police he went to the 1200 block of Severn Station Road shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday to deliver a pizza for the Pizza Express shop.As he got out of his car, a youth walked up to him and said, "That's my pizza," police said.

I realize the point of your recent article on the Michelangelo's pizza shop in Towson was to demonstrate the effect of the Super Bowl on local businesses ("Pizzerias expect a boost from Super Bowl watchers," Feb. 3). However, it also illustrated another important story: How an immigrant in our wonderful country can play by the rules and become a success. Shop owner Khawar Ghafoor has worked hard and done all the right things to become a true asset to the U.S. He could have sneaked in and sponged off the system like so many others, but he didn't.

Dayone Jackson, 20, has been charged with attempted murder and armed robbery in connection with an attack on a pizza delivery driver, police said. Police said that a 26-year-old man was shot in the stomach Saturday in the Cherry Hill neighborhood as he delivered food from a pizza shop to a residence in the 2500 block of Terra Firma Road. The man, who has not been identified, was taken to an area hospital for treatment. Jackson's address is listed in online court records as being in the same block where the shooting happened.

A pizza shop clerk who worked 20 years at Pepe's Pizza shop on Falls Road was convicted yesterday in the stabbing death of the owner in July of last year. A Baltimore County Circuit Court jury convicted Martin Hoffman, 39, of felony murder in the killing of Peter Makris. He also was convicted of robbery and of robbery with a dangerous weapon. The jury returned its verdict shortly before 2 a.m. Makris, 72, died of multiple stab wounds July 3 after confronting his assailant at the restaurant in the 6000 block of Falls Road, according to testimony.

Two off-duty county police officers arrested a man who attacked one of them after kicking a woman who lives in the first block of 5th Ave. S.W. Friday afternoon, officials said.Linda Lee Fuhrer, 38, refused medical treatment after being kicked in the groin, police said. Ms. Fuhrer called police shortly after 4 p.m. to complain of a stranger trespassing in her back yard, police said.Ms. Fuhrer went out to confront the man and was attacked, police said. Witnesses flagged down Officer Frederick Roth, who was driving a marked police car, officials said.
