When Alissa Harrington was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 38, she did what she's accustomed to doing when she needs answers. She reached for her smartphone. The Stevenson University technology professional says mobile apps helped her overcome one of the biggest burdens for anyone confronting a life-threatening illness: Managing the deluge of medical records and appointments and communicating what comes out of those to friends and family. "Mobile apps have really eliminated that," said Harrington, who as an instructional designer builds online courses and trains faculty how to apply technology to learning.

Ever since Pinterest hit big, we've been buildling up a few Pinterest boards. The biggest board is called Make this for Gorelick . Now, when I see a tempting recipe on cool sites like Serious Eats or The Kitchn , I have somewhere to pin them. Have a look. And if you want to help build up this board, let me know. I'll add your name to the board's contributors. There are more Baltimore Sun Pinterest boards you can follow here .

I started using Pinterest a year and a half ago. Partly because I had a feeling Pinterest was about to take off (it did) and partly, like a smoker uses toothpicks, to curb a little online shopping problem I had. Somehow, pinning beautiful things is almost like dropping them into a cart, only without the guilt and debt.  When I began planning my wedding, I settled into a serious Pinterest binge. For the first two months of planning, I consulted Pinterest like a needy friend.

Chalk this up as another wacky use of Pinterest : Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley is promoting a contest on the hot website where Maryland entrepreneurs can pitch their startups by pinning 10 images to the governor's board . No kidding. There's been a ton of chatter this year in Maryland about supporting tech startups. The state raised $84 million from tax credit sales that will be used to fund early stage startups . And today, at the University of Maryland College Park, the Startup America initiative for Maryland is kicking off. There are all sorts of websites out there for entrepreneurs to pitch their startups.

Yes, it's all the rage and yes, there are great ideas and money saving tips, but it's time to remind my fellow brides out there that Pinterest is not the end-all to wedding planning. In fact, if you are planning what I like to call a #Pinwed , I'd strongly advise you to consider these two questions first. Are you actually saving money with the DIY Pinterest mentality? Don't get me wrong; you can absolutely save money using the tips and crafty ideas Pinterest has to offer.

My son Isaac turned 4 this week, and we're having his birthday party this weekend. I simply cannot wait. His third birthday was kind of a disaster -- his dad was in California for pre-deployment training, I was having some pregnancy complications, and we never managed to put together a party. Then on the actual day of his birthday, he got a stomach virus. Poor kiddo. Already, this year is going better. Dad's home, we're heading to the Robinson Nature Center with some friends and family, upgraded to the planetarium party because Isaac is obsessed with space (and, yeah, we're probably overcompensating a bit for last year's fiasco)
