The teen homicide suspect stood with his head hung low Tuesday as his attorney pleaded unsuccessfully for a judge to take his youth and learning disabilities into consideration and grant him bail. Allen Pinkney, wearing the distinctive black-and-white T-shirt in which he was arrested Saturday, stood shackled in the second row of a courtroom in the Baltimore Central Booking and Intake Center. Pinkney, 16, is one of two teenagers who Baltimore police say fatally stabbed 51-year-old Kimberly Leto during a burglary Friday in Highlandtown.

Pinkney L. Near, a former resident of Baltimore and senior research curator at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, died Aug. 29 of pneumonia at a hospital in Hartford, Conn., where he and his wife were visiting relatives. He was 63.A memorial service for Mr. Near will be held at noon Saturday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Richmond, where he lived.Born in New York City, he was reared in Baltimore. He was a 1944 graduate of St. Paul's School and a 1950 graduate of Johns Hopkins University.

Fortified by caffeine and good will, the volunteer construction crew at Love Fellowship Tabernacle in Brooklyn, N.Y., worked long hours to transform a dingy storage area into the Kingdom Cafe. The hammering and plastering created a restaurant and gathering spot for young people at this Pentecostal church in the struggling East New York neighborhood. As for the lights and camera, they were there for Divine Restoration, a TV One program that finds black churches needing a makeover and turns the process into television.

Pinkney Albert "Pink" Howell, a retired barber and tonsorial school owner who was active in Democratic politics and served in the House of Delegates in the 1970s, died of heart disease May 16 at his daughter's Woodmoor area home. He was 91. Born in Chesterfield, S.C., he was the youngest of 18 siblings. He moved to Baltimore in 1936, and three years later opened a two-chair shop in the 1700 block of E. Chase St. He later had shops on Gay Street at the old Belair Market, in Cherry Hill, at Bentalou and Baker streets, and on Pennsylvania Avenue.

On May 16, 2007, PINKNEY A. HOWELL; beloved husband of the late Sara E. Howell; loving father of Rosemary Atkinson (Donald), Sara Smalley (Eugene) and Pinkie Drayton (James). He was preceded in death by his daughter, Olivia Alexander. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Family will receive friends Thursday, at the Family Owned Howell Funeral Home, 4600 Liberty Heights Avenue, from 3 to 5 PM and 6 to 7 PM. Masonic rights will begin 5:30 to 6:00 PM in the funeral home chapel.
